GOD! this is really going tooooo far! I mean this is so stupid. If a woman wants to do something wrong, she'd do it regardless of the place and the equipment provided, if she's not allowed to use the internet then she'll do the wrong she wants to do on the phone, or is it haram for her to talk on the phone if she was alone at home!
Someone should draw a red line to those Muftis, this is not religion, this is pure personal stupidity! God Bless Amr Khaled, he is one of the very few paying effort to show the real Islam, and not the Islam sick people are trying to market!

Lets not forget that Mr. Othman Al-Khamis is a very hated man in Kuwait for his views towards Shei'a, the whole thing might be false.
    just my 2 cents :)

what kind of image we are giving to the whole world?
we treat the woman as a walking Sinwhen she is born we cut a piece of her gentile, when she hits pubirty we cover her all up, and now she cant use the net without a guradian who shoudl be of great understanfing of her devilish slutty soul

Brothers seriously need to read A'Hadith, otherwise they shall have been on the path of dereliction but only for too long a period. This fatwa makes absolute sense. Women are haraam in Islam. It is revolting to listen to these women (and even men!) make such derogatory comments about such a knowledgeable and righteous scholar and question the infallible wisdom of a man who is only doing his religious duty in protecting brothers from the evils of womanhood. Shame on you, brothers. Shame on you.

  7. I'm sorry brothers and sisters, I meant to say the evils of estrogen and wickedness of womanhood.

Javed, do you think men are halal… honestly? ;)
maybe young boys are, at least they do not have the evil estrogen, evil semen or anything evil!!
what a shameful and disgusting nation we have become
anyways this is not worth anymore wasting time
poor your woman is, poor your girl, how I wish you don't have any

Javed has a point to an extent. I wouldn't women are wicked and evil that’s a little harsh. But as a women I under stand where this is coming from. I mean don’t get me wrong I know all women aren’t like that. But growing up in the US there was a lot of temptations and almost all of my arabic friends talked or "hooked up" with someone on the Internet. Don’t get me wrong I'm all for women’s rights. But to a certain extent women should be paid attention of were they go online and who they talk to, it is for there own good. And I would know by and experience and I know I wouldn’t want my daughter making the dame mistake.

    PPl,

at the time time of the prophet, women were riding hourses and going to the souks on their own, and now some religion clerk is trying 2 convince us she cant use the internet alone?

women fought wars and were part of smuggeling food 2 the prophet and abu bakr themselves, and now they cant drive a car!

    plz!

men are as develish as women…

actually, men are biologically inclined 2 be more develish than women especially when it comes 2 sex related matters….

    this is not right ppl….

this has nothing 2 do with Islam….

Its a joke, that all over Saudi arabia for example, women are all dressed up in black and cant so much as walk or get a taxi alone, whereas at elka3ba and al7aram elnabawy, men and women are walking shoulder to shoulder heading for their prayers…

If that is not the true spirit of islam, right in God's house and the prophet's mosque, then i dont know what is!!!!!!

being wicked and devlish doesnt need the interent…

if a woman is 2 be devlish ( or a man for that matter) they ll be JUST THAT regradless….

other wise, why dont we just lock women up in closed rooms and add a lock on their genetalia 2 make sure they will not act lustfully!!!

and how about men in Islam….

how about the fact that 90% of interent usage in saudi arabia is directed towards pornography!

    Grow up ppl

ya hossam fathalla , don't say 90% of internet usage in KSA is directed to porn , coz i live here and first of all there is a lot of people use it in a very decent way , most of universities here u submit ur assignments or download it via internet , all of porn sites are forbidden , i am not saudi by the way so don't think i'm defending them , and i hope that sheikh who said the fantabulous fatwa , rethink , and work his mind in good fatwas if he has one .
Javed , plz , even if u r kidding , talk decently about ladies coz we can very easily make men our daily joke .
    have a nice day all

those who talk or favour this kind of BS are stupid.. seprate personal freedom from religion first..i dont want religion poke nose in my every matter of daily life..

rather than talking this bull shit of banning women from internet.. First ask who spends more time on internet porn.. men or women??? obviously men.. now what evil women are doin on the internet..

talk about equity and personal freedom.. i did rather wash my mouth in toilet than propogating belifs like chaperoning a women with "mahram" when she goes online..

wtf.. muslim society is sick and retarded to bone..

i have good solution to these mullah .. pull them in a genetic labotary and experiment on what causes retardness, low IQ, stupidity and ugliness in human race.. god i wish hitler was alive today and was targetting the mullahs…

this is 2005 (or 1426).. women dont need mahram for driving or goin around or internet. Men have no time to chaperone their women either..

lets not forget.. all these mullahs are stupid people who never found their place among girls in their school life.. so they start hating women

I was happy to hear one of Al-Azhar Sheikh's condemning such a fatwa and calling it ignorant.

In fact this Azhar Sheikh was carrying his Laptop and giving live fatwa's on a TV show at one of the Egyptian TV shows. He was talking about the boost of internet in teaching and searching for Azhar, and in some of his answers, he was referring to online documents from Sharia.

The so-called fatwa is a fake. But that hasn't stopped legions of Muslim and non Muslim bloggers alike from capitalizing on this report in order to slam scholars, or the Wahabees, or Muslims in general. It took me about 10 minutes of research to come up with the fact that it's a fake. And I'm not a "Wahabee" in the slightest. A news report from 1 1/2 yrs ago about a fatwa, the text of which no one has actually read. If we're going to take things like this at face value, we'd better start believing everything US officials tell us about Iraq (or Iran… or Syria…).

  18. Tamim | April 8, 2006 at 4:10 pm | Permalink

If we've come to this point we'd better have non-democratic rulers than have Muftis tell us such trivialities.

Wow what next…a woman must be shaperoned when in the shower incase she decides to touch herself…??

    This is just plain ignorance.

Besma please how can you even suport this nonsence, in any way shape or form? if you do not like the culture you live in then why don't you move to Packistan or Afghanistan, and except being opressed by ignorent men.

    Thank you

I can't imagine how "a woman is haram" !! and what does this have to do with the internet? And I think this does not, at all, need a 'FATWA'.It's like giving a fatwa about preventing women from using cell phones or from watching tv or about preventing men from breaking road law. It's just nonsense.Allah(Azza wajalla)is watching all his servants and it's up to Allah (Azza wajalla)to judge them for their deeds .

  21. Tamim | April 10, 2006 at 2:14 am | Permalink

This is "haram" and nonsense. You might as well find fatwas against the use of cell phones by women and say it's "haram". This is slavery in the name of Islam.

There was a time in history when people use to Bury new boarn girls because they thought they were less valuble than boys. Thankfully this is not a common practice, although these fanatical Imams seem to be heading that way.

  23. Micky | April 11, 2006 at 8:10 pm | Permalink

Fortunately this seems to have been an unfunny joke…
It is interesting to see how some of the comments reveal pure women-hatred.
What hypocrit is calling women wicked? It is the men who rape and kill through history.

  24. Mougly | April 13, 2006 at 9:08 am | Permalink

I watched a documentary a few days ago on CBC; it was about a Muslim community in British Colombia, where women have been asking for the right to pray in the main room of the Musk as men do.
During the Documentary many men and women were interviewed, and although most have agreed that there is no reason why men and women cannot pray in the same room, there were a few people (men) who's comments where shocking to here especially in a country like Canada.

So reading these posts from dumb ass, ignorant men and even some women, was not surprising, although it is sad that we have people who think that way.

I have no comment about that: it's a shame!
Besma, it means that your friends aren't strong, if they are "frightened of the temption in USA": what you do is a buisiness between you and God, untill you didn't make bad to I'manyone. Why isn't Internet "haram" 4 men? :)

  26. hi | July 2, 2006 at 8:31 am | Permalink

why is it that only women are considered haram, what about men? Why should we get rid of temptation when instead you men need to be stronger? Afterall, isn't this one big test? SO what good will this test be if women are eliminated from the internet.

  27. Abu Abdullah | November 30, 2006 at 9:43 am | Permalink

As Salaam u A'laykum. I am way late in getting in the game here. But I would have like to have seen this fatwa. I have search it using the Shaykh by the name of Google.. and couldn't find it. So first of all it would have been nice to post the fatwa of it does exist or atleast a few quotes from it before everyone here had gotten in a hissy-fit. And primarily before anyone had attacked this Scholar for what he did/did not say.

Imam Maalik had mentioned that we can take from anyone and refuse to take from anyone's wording except for the Prophet himself, sallahu alayhi wa salaam. And Imam Shafi' had mentioned that it is not permissible for anyone to abide by any rulings that he himself had given unless they knew first the reason why. So having said that if the Shaykh DID mention it one may take his comment and uphold it, or throw it against the wall. And before commenting on what he may or may not have said it would be best to check it first, for all of us.

And Shaykh Jibreen does not support Al-Qaeda or Binladin. Binladin was on the run and kicked out of KSA long before September 11th. And the colleagues of Jibreen have much earlier warned against Binladin and advised him before much of the world knew what a Binladin was. However, despite the fact that Binladin may get sympathy votes by some of the ignorant people in KSA and the rest of the Muslim world. Having a good ultimate goal does not justify a person to do anything to accomplish it. Anyone who has began to look at the history of the companions can see this. In the apologetic supporters view he is attacking what some of them see as the big enemy, 'and who cares what methods he uses.'

So if anyone thinks that the Shaykh supports Al-Qaeda.. please produce your proof or remain silent. And before commenting on what the Shaykh may have said, it would be better to find out what he exactly said. His supposed fatwa may be one thing, but indeed slandering or backbighting him would be another.

It is mentioned in an authentic Hadith that if a true scholar rules in a matter in which he is correct in he gets two rewards, one for his judgement and one if he is correct. And he will receieve just one reward if he is incorrect. But for backbighting or slandering someone there is no reward for us, but there is a taking of our rewards/good deeds by the person who is the victim on the day of Judgement. May ALLAH protect us all. Ameen

P.S… someone above DID say that this 'fatwa' was indeed false and uncovered some 2 years ago by now… let's save our time and energies…

  29. KoolNerd | February 8, 2008 at 8:41 am | Permalink

It was obvious that Javed's post was reeking of sarcasm…but just to throw in my two cents from a biological perspective with regards to the "evils of estrogen" comment: BOTH men and women have estrogen…whether you wish to acknowledge something like that or not…its true…just men have lower levels of estrogen then women. And FYI…i think the "terrors of testosterone" is a far more fitting commentary, seeing that thats the main cause of aggression and sexual arousal in males… P.S> is it not obvious that the fatwa is fake? Unfortunately some people have nothing better to do then make up absurd fatwas…similar to the one about a woman breastfeeding her male co-workers so that they would be mahrams, and therefore working with men wouldn't be "haram". No seriously…do a search n u'll find it…then again, dont waste your time doing a search, cuz people write these bogus fatwas just to get YOU to read them…its a way of wasting 5 minutes from your precious life, which you could have spent doing something far more productive. Then again, you just wasted 3 minutes reading my comment didn't you? Go pray two rakats or do something good to make it up :-D

All these 'scholarly muslims' commmenting on here what is haram and what is halal. What does Islam say reg. a women needing a mahram whether from Quran, Hadith, Ijmaa/consensus of the Ulamaa or through Qiyaas. This is what is important, not all these views on what is right or wrong based on ignorant lay or lapsed Muslims. And with Allah knows best and with Him is success.

  32. Haitham | April 27, 2008 at 11:33 pm | Permalink

    Muhammad,

This is one of the most ignorant comments I heard these days, there are worse. I'm not going to argue your references as I respect them, but do know the first word of Qura'an? Iqra'a… (for non Arab, Iqra'a means "read"). First thing God asks Muslims to do is "read" to educate. In today's terms, Internet is one of the main sources and future of education.

I don't care what "ignorant" Ijmaa and Qiyaas says if they are aganist this.

Anyway, I always doubt such comments to be coming from real Muslims. You can claim to be one, but if you swear trillion times I won't belive you, simply because your ideas serve no one but present bad/fake side of Islam. People like you does nothing but flame the Islamophobia supported and feed by Zionists propaganda.

    Get a life, Muhammad!

If you want to supervise the woman on the internet then how about also supervising the man on the internet?

Men also coomit evil and also do haram things istaghfir Allah.

I can understand that the Imam wants to protect his country because he believe the men are week.

I want to ask why do u blame everything on women?
The men also need to take responsibility for there actions, its not the womans fault! everyone needs to fear Allah and repent.

Men u need to fear Allah and start taking responsibility for ur own actions.

And oh yea grow a beard and wear a robe:)

  34. Slave_of_Allah. | May 2, 2008 at 12:49 am | Permalink

The solution to preventing haram is for the islamic country to do internet traficing and block certain websites from being viewed by all their country. This way both women and men will be prevented from viewing porn.

I truelly believe that there are many good muslims in the world who use the internet for halal, for example shopping off ebay, also some people use the internet for education searching in google. Or for watching islamic videos, keeping in touch with friends, or playing games.

I am a God fearing person and I know how risky the internet can be, but the cure is for every God fearing person to remember that Allah is with us all the time, and that Allah can punish the eyes with boiling water or fire if they look at haram, this will make u fear Allah, religon is for Allah so u should fear Allah more than any imam or sheik.

Allah help us all to stay strong, Ameen.

I would like to say as a female us citizen that mysogony exists world wide and it is not until we stand up and stop the lies!!!! Then our lives will change. Women hating is as ancient a concept as breathing,. I for one have had it with all these insecure men thinking they have one up on us just because they are male so they can make our lives less important, dangerous and miserable. They
    keep us (most worldwide) in
proverty, rape us and our children and rage war. The end of the blood and tears are coming for you my friends.

Amazing that muslims are so divided, tribe against tribe, colour against colour, male against female. No wonder the Islamic world is in such a mess, muslims have forgotten their true faith. If something is evil then it is evil to All! You can not forbid half the nation what is permissible to the other half, since the other half will eventually distort All. Women are capable of reasoning when male bravado takes over in these cases I say Have the internet, you are welcome to it, as you are welcome to all other sins that you openly allow for yourselves in todays crazy world of hypocrisy.

At BIN, we do not claim to know Islam in its entirety. We are, like most people, ordinary, run-of-the-mill guys with day jobs (and some with super-human powers by virtue of an accident) Rather, things like a fatwa banning internet usage, or the recent fatwa by Ibn Jibreen, are matters of consternation to us. It is by no means an accident that the unifying theme for these "scholarly opinions" is Wahabism. From supporting al-Qaeda ("A silly organization with a bunch of confused
