17-year-old boy and 19-year-old girl, both UAE nationals, were each sentenced to spend one month in jail. The teenagers were exchanging “indecent” pictures through their cellphones and sending pornographic pictures through email. The Dubai Court of First Instance heard that one of the girl’s friends was jealous of the relationship she had with her male friend. This friend tipped off authorities that the two were exchanging indecent material… Be ware of jealous girls

oh how sad. poor kids. they should not have been doing that because, well its you know well tey just shouldnt. but thats so unfair they got caught and now they have to spend time in jail. its so sad yet so funny.

I live in the UAE. How sad. I hadn’t heard about it here. Pics in phones is a very big deal and if someone wants to defame a girl all they gotta do is take a pic of her w/ their phone and put it on the net or pass it from phone 2 phone. males looking at women’s pics (even when they are wearing hijab) is big time ‘eib (shameful) overhere. understanding how sensitive pics are here for UAE nationals helps 2 understand why this happened.

Hell stupidity is what it is. They portray a country who is trying to be Idealistic as the West but yet holds on to the outdated traditions of the past
Trying to be Idealistic, YES. Betraying the Arabic/Islamic tradition and culture, NO.
It’s a very thin line between both. What the west cannot understand is that Arabs are more conservative in general comparing to the west. We have our own values, which is stricter than these in the west. And generally that is respected.
Although you see a lot of openness (relatively) and freedom in our streets and in our media, however what you don’t see is the amount of disgust and hard comments they receive from mostly all generations in these countries.
Yes we are hardliner in general, however we are open to the world, but we are selective in what we do. It’s a dilemma for some, they get lost between two different set of values, but let’s face it. Look at the elections in Iraq, Palestine, Iran even Lebanon. The results were surprising to the entire world in all these countries because the conservative parties won a very big share in all these countries. What does this tell us?
It tells us, although we are open, but we are conservative. We are not, and we do not want to be like the west. We have different set of values, culture and tradition, and we respect that. If we disappoint the west, that’s their problem, not ours.

This is the funniest thing ive heard. 1 month jail time for having indecent pics on their phones. I bet you they would of gotten 0 days in jail if it were kiddy porn.

Yes, many traditions that other countries have may seem odd to those who do not live there however, these young adults must have known the consequences beforehand and took the chance. They lost. If the people of Dubai are unhappy with their laws then THEY need to do something about it. It is not the role of Western nations to take on that responsibility.
I believe that they deserve a less severe punishment ,however ,this incident shows the difficulties teenagers are facing in the Islamic world ,the porn culture is wide spreaded in the air yet there are asked to behave and act according to the islamic rules .the incident show the absence of the parents role.

Ahmad Shah #14 “Jailed just for exchange of pictures, although there is widely spread prostitution over all in dubai, no one jailed????” i have lived in dubai for more than 6 yrs and my whole family is situated there and i have to correct you and say that this is NOT TRUE AT ALL WHAT YOU ARE SAYING. it is true that there are CERTAIN 2 or 3 streets allowing prostitution but any other region or street in dubai that has citizens who behave undecent definitly get punished. believe me i know from many of my friends whose lives had totally changed through little mistakes they had done. there is something i would like to add to Sarah # 24..i agree with you on many of the above mentioned points above and i wouldl ike to add that dubai is a very open minded country. however it is based on religion and anyone who tries to disrespect this religion in a way or another gets punished. i believe that this is not wrong. if you ever get to go to dubai, you would enjoy it. everyone goes clubbin, dresses like he wants to ONLY IN CERTAIN REGIONS and on the other side gets punished for a slight mistake. i mean that is what is keepin dubai’s status and reputation so high. think about it!!!
im a overseas student in dubai from iran and am dissapointed at these teens being jailed. this does not reflect islamic culture or our values.If emiratie teens are becoming corrupt then only there americanised goverment is to blame,for promoting negative aspects of western culture.Dubai is a center corrupting iranian and saudi youth whom travel here,and then go home to spread this negative culture.
If these 2 teenagers where sending pronography to one another,in there on privAcy and not harming ppl,then it is there own business. muslims should read up on “amre be ma’arouf wa nahie az monkar” in the Holy Qur’an.

Every one have right to share his passion with others in any kind of style if other one don’t mind it. It is too bad to lock up teen agers on account of this matter. But Dubai is famous for Liberty so why this happend, i don’t understand. But i am strongly agree with ” DR N Aftab” the last one replyer. every one come to dubai for enjoying their life…So why they focus on this couple. Life is so bore without Liberty…
If they lock up everyone who exchanges photos, then I bet you’d have a good 60-70% of Arab population rotting in jail cells lol…. It’s too bad for these two kids.
Imagine if those two kids had been standing on any of “the three streets” when they exchanged the messages, then maybe they would not have gotten into trouble?!? The it’s-only-illegal-if-you-get-caught is not a Dubai phenomenon. Some places it’s about sending SMS, other places it’s about speeding or cheating in taxes
Last year I saw a documentary on the luxury hotels in Dubai where they talked to one of the stewards (or whatever they are called) taking care of the luxury suites. The interviewer asked whether they had to remove the contents of the bar cabinet every time one of the sheiks came to stay in the suite and the steward answered something in the direction of: “Well, it is against their religion, but a lot of the sheiks tend to appreciate a well-stocked mini bar, so we let them decide on their own!” Moral standards are good and for some people double standards are double as good.
When I was in Dubai for a trade show we went to a couple of different bars in different parts of the city and they all served beer and had girls for sale. Maybe it was coincidence that we hit two of “the three streets” where prostitution was accepted, I don’t know. Except from a girl from Cyprus who came back every 15 minutes until she finally said something very fast and left, they all accepted a polite no and it was actually a very international experience. I mean, how often do you have a chance to talk to somebody from Somalia, Kenya, Cyprus, and Russia on the same evening?
I can’t talk for everybody, but I am probably not alone in recognizing that Dubai is not known for its liberty but rather its hypocrisy. Dubai is pretty much like Las Vegas - a semi-legal refuge in the middle of a puritan region where self-righteous people feel free to do what they would not do if they risked running into their neighbor or priest
To me, Dubai did not feel like the liberty I am used to, but it is still a wonderful city with a lot to offer from the sights in the old part of the city to the ‘oil money monuments’ in the new flashy parts of town. It is definitely not the last time I have visited Dubai.

yeah ahmed shh is right there is prostitution every where dubai and off course arabic danse(is also a source of vulgarity)but there is no jail for those youngers who are banging young girls and watching nude dances in clubs. so why dubai court decide and punish them just for pornographic material or just for passing some indecent material by phone or e mails that is abuses
its actually funny jail is ok but just for doing that is too much yet they do have a good reason to put dem in jail. dat must be a stupid girl
