Scientology! It is a religion. It was started in the 1950s by a science fiction writer named L. Ron Hubbard in fulfilment to his declared aim to start a religion to make money ("Writing for a penny a word is ridiculous. If a man really wants to make a million dollars, the best way would be to start his own religion" - Reader's Digest reprint, May 1980, p.1). There are more than 3,200 churches, missions and groups in 154 countries.

You appear to be very enlightened in many ways, so I am surpised you would blog this kind of statement. Mr. Hubbard did not make that statement. It was stated by Orwell. Scientology has provided me the means to discover the truth about myself and my life and the world around me. It requires that one study it without bias or prejudice, and that one be willing to look and observe and discover what is true for himself or herself.
Unfortunately, scientology is one of many money-making cults in the world today.
It’s prime focus is, indeed, the accumulation of power and wealth.
And, despite its recent downward turn in membership, this self-proclaimed church has been quite good at achieving these twin goals.
The criminal activities of this cult in California during the 1970′s is well documented and has been profiled in Time Magazine, among others.
The bulk of the low ranking “members” are convinced that they path toward universal “truths” is arrived at by paying large amounts of money for various “evaluations”. The more “truth” you want, the more money you must pay. And, because this is a cult, the congregation has been convinced that money is far less important than the “thruths” sold by the Hubbardists. It’s really quite an arrangement.
Scientology is perhaps one of the highest profiled cults today because of its strong recruitment of Hollywood celebrities. Indeed, fo many struggling actors today, the “church” has become something of a networking hotspot.
Those who have been taken in by this cult include Tom Cruise, John Travolta and a host of lesser known actors willing to surrender themselves for the promise of career success. Sadly, Hollywood is filled with those who would surrender anything (oncluding family, money and mind control) for a shot at stardom.
Another thing to be weary of where this cult is concerned is their propensity toward litigation.
Rather than debate their side of any given issue, Hubbardists will unleash a pack of lawyers to try and quell any sort of criticism.
Generally, once the Lawyers of Scientology have been unleashed, one can assume that some amount of truth about this cult has been exposed.
Oh, and the “church” of scientology also internally advances the idea that the world is controlled by an unseen space alien named Xanu. Yes, you read that correctly. Of course, the public face of scientology isn’t keen to highlight that bit.
Aside from that, they seem like very nice zombies.
I seem to have made a spelling mistake above.
Please note that “zombies” should be read as “people”.
It seems there seems to be the contention that L. Rpn Hubbard did not make the statement, “The best way to make money is to start a religion”. For anyone who wants a clear arguement made that he DID make this statement, log onto:www.don-lindsay-archive.org/ scientology/start.a.religion.html – 11k . It seems the Church of Scientlology sued a German Newspaper for attributing this statement to him and lost. Anyways, no matter who the heck said it, it’s one of the most clear truths out there and the Church of Scientlogy has SURE MADE ALOT OF MONEY. But then so have all the so-called mega-churches here in the US and especially the televised ones. Jim Baker anyone?
