Human-brained monkeys

by Haitham Sabbah on 07/14/2005

In cutting-edge experiments, scientists have injected human brain cells into monkey fetuses to study the effects.

Scientists have been warned that their latest experiments may accidently produce monkeys with brains more human than animal.

An eminent committee of American scientists will call for restrictions into the research, saying the outcome of such studies cannot be predicted and may in fact produce subjects with a 'super-animal' intelligence.

Why would that be strange, or even “evil” ? Is the creation of “Chimeras” inherently bad? Could it be that this is just one of many steps on the path to understanding what makes us human (that tiny 2% of DNA difference between humans and apes, or whatever it is).

But let me focus my question:

1. So, what if we create a few new species with super-animal intelligence? What of it ?

2. If we have a problem with that, then what about creating a few species with super human intelligence ? Would it be bad ?

3. Is there any fundamental reason why we should not be involved in the creation of novel biological (or non biological) lifeforms and “technologies” (neuro enhancements, inter-body connectivity, extra-sensory input, brain-to-brain communication, to name a few) ?
