Yes, it’s Google’s own instant messaging system, for text and also voice communications.
Google Talk goes beyond text-based instant messaging using a computer keyboard to let users hold voice conversations with other computer users.
If confirmed, the combined computer text and voice-calling service would put Google in competition with a similar service pioneered by Skype, which has attracted tens of millions of users to its own service.
Earlier, Google introduced a new service called the Google Sidebar, a stand-alone software program that sits on a user’s desktop and provides “live” information updates.

Although google is willing to federate on communication services, it still has a far way to go to really be able to replace Skype. Skype’s business model is centered on enabling users to make calls to the public network, which google doesn’t do yet, not to mention Skype-In and Skype Voicemail.
It also lacks several features that would make it a “real” replacement for MSN, Yahoo, Etc. Such as file transfers, video conferencing. Not to mention emotions and winks which i don’t really appreciate; i really like love the simplicity of Google Talk; youngsters won’t!
And until my privacy question is addressed by their tech support (where google talk stores chat history), I won’t be using it as my primary communication tool.
