A Lebanese nongovernmental organization, Helem (Arabic for ‘Dream‘), which fights for the rights of homosexuals, has recently begun publishing Barra (Arabic for ‘Out’), the first quarterly Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersexed and Queer magazine in the Arab world.

I say great for them. It is about time. you can not avoid the fact that being gay or lesbian is something people are born with.
Leave us kids alone
I say , wht the HeLL are they doin , i understand that the majority in lebanon are Non Muslims , but am kinda scared of wht will happen to the other ppl (like in Saudi arabia , who just have shit in their brains , when they think that they’re gay ) .
I think there is no something called GAY or Lesbian , this is just a piece a shit made sick people who just need ATTENTION !!!
I thank god for the Brain he gave us to think about things, Wrong or Right , Bad or Good, so people out there , think 1000000 times before u say ” i cant do any thing about it , i was made GAY” ….
sorry for my rude words…
salam to JOrdan
ihado, I don’t know where you got the idea that majority in Lebanon are non Muslims. In fact contrary is the case. Majority are Muslims, and this is evident in all world records. Check the CIA factbook, or the wikipedia pages, or any official resources such as the UN’s, you will find that Muslims are the majority. Percentage varies between different resources from 60/40 to 70/30, all in favor of Muslims.
On the other hand, I don’t think this has anything to do with (any) religion. Christianity also does not support these people. Look for news about Pope reactions to gays issues and you will see that.
ihabo,
you basicaly said it at the end. you want us to forgive you for your rude words. im glad you recognized that what you said is rude. but its not just rude, this is hate speech. you are such a homophobe. man, you need to get over your heterosexual pedistal. who you sleep with does not define you as a person. be more open minded and get over yourself.
shame shame shame
8O
Your a progressive guy i actually did think you were a bit of a muallah
Ihabo,
From what i know of the arab world (i lived there for 20 years) people already have as many gay relationships as anywhere else.
All this magazine is doing is spreading awareness. It’s not spreading gayness. Gayness has been there since the birth of time. And a magazine will not increase it or decrease it.
you are a nasty crude and basically not a true musli, what in the hell was going through your mind when you wrote the damn Magizine…..shame on all of the ones that helped make the magizine…machallah allikoom…..
r u kiddin me?? lebanese ppl have truly gone too far. they try to westernize themsleves so much that they got to this point. i serioulsy do not understand this. i hope i dont see a day wer an arab country is ok with gay ppl
mmmm thats nice to hear that
actualy i hopr to find one in jordan its amazing
and its good magazine and very free mmm however lesbians and gays are human like us why we dont respect them and accept them???
Humans, yes. Like us, excuse me?
God created Adam and Eve. I don’t recall reading somewhere that one of them was bisexual!!
But how would Adam or Eve known if they were bisexual?
Exactly the same way existing Adam and Eve came to know.
Westernize? do you really think that homosexuality was part of the western culture? dont you know that europeans used to come to our countries to have homosexual sex away from the opression of the church? you know what the west wants? they want us arab ( ARAB= muslim, christian,… and Atheist) to keep fighting and stay intolerant.
Well helem is an arabic voice to say no for intolerence and no for homophobia, helem managed to bring lebanon muslim , christian and atheist togethr.
get over this hatred of yours, live your life and let other live, who are you to decide what people should do or not
Best
A proudly gay and tolerant person
It’s finally time for people to understand that everyone is free as long as he/she isn’t hurting anyone. A person’s sexual life is his/her own personal private matter.
At the end of the day, noone really knows what happens behind closed doors. Even straight people have the weirdest sexual desires ever. So why do we have to judge gays and lesbians?
I think that having an Arab gay/lesbian magazing is a very bold step towards freedom.
Reading this discussion makes me very pround of all of you: pro and anti gays. It’s very encouraging to see my fellow arabs discussing homosexuality. and yes, it is not gonna be easy and all responses are welcome; the “rude” before the “nice”. : )
My experience from the middle east (born and raised in the ultra conservative Saudi Arabia) is that there are lots of gays in the arab world. they are forced into arranged marriges and are expected to lead “normal” lives. “Barra” brings the hope to these ppl that one day they will be recognized and that society will stand up for them. I don’t think that will happen by the time i’m done university, but I will never submit to the will of the main stream society. However,I will make sure that my voice is heard through publications like “barrah”, and that I take every chance to challenge the “straight fags” as I call them. Manhood comes from the manners and the values we stand for not from lables made by some “straight acting” fellas.
In Canada where I live now, the last government made it legal for gays to be married, although I find the idea strange I do not really care what two consenting adults do. And since that law came into effect I have not seen any changes in our society, nor did the gay population suddenly explode, now our new government led by a right wing Christian prime minister (at least that’s what he calls himself) wants to reverse this decision, which is a waist of time money.
As for the argument from some people that Homosexuality is a western thing, have you not heard of the Afghan men who take young Boys to be their sex slaves in a way, and it is common enough that a documentary was made about it.
Homosexuality has been around for a long time and whether we agree with it or not is relevant as it will not go away, so if you happen to disagree with it or not just think what deference does it really make in your life?
Frankly I am a lot more disturbed about publications that promote hate than I am with this type of magazine, and by the way you don’t have to read it.
Peace
Saedni!!!!!!!!
People are free to show their sexual preferences and no Religion has the Right to consider itself as the Keeper of Truth. God is far byond this ;;;;;;;;;;
No way that homosexuality is a Western thing. I live in the United States, and there are plenty of homophobic people here. Ever hear of “fundamentalist Christians?” They are about 40% of the United States’ population, and they believe homosexuality is a sin, that it can be changed through prayer, and other such things that fly in the face of history, science, and reality.
So, don’t tell me that homosexuality is a Western thing! Homosexuals are everywhere–it’s just that they have to hide themselves in countries where they can get in trouble for it.
can u help to find gay arab magazine in the website i nee to know about all the gay arab.thank you
why do nt you open your mind? gay or lesbian are same as adam and eve..whats the problem..the only thing they differed is about the preference in sex…If you think sex is only for the heterosexual..you are definitely biased…and ABSOLUTELY HYPOCRITE…there some muslims gay..do the same thing…why dont you accept that? how about you?are you sure with your gender preference? Liars go to hell!!!!
Before I say anything, I would just like to link to this website which I feel makes some pretty damn good points:
Queer Sexuality and Identity in the Qur’an and Hadith
If you take the time to read it, you will find that the Qur’an does not condemn homosexuality at all. Also, I think that the ‘God created Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve’ argument is a sorry one. Adam and Eve were two people. There are more people that have lived in the world than there is an actual number for, and I doubt that Adam and Eve could really represent everything that every human is or was. If that was the case, then that would mean that every human being who wasn’t exactly like Adam and Eve was a sinner. You might as well say, “oh, but Adam and Eve were white, so all black people are an abomination!” Pah!
Anyway, what does the Qur’an (and religion) have to do with what I’m talking about? Well, pretty much everyone knows that the Arab community consists mainly of Muslims, and Lebanon is one of those Muslim communities, as Haitham said. I will have to disagree with him, however, when he says that this issue has nothing to do with religion, because it does. Most people believe that homosexuality is a sin because of their religion, and if that’s not the case, then it’s from their upbringing, where either their parents or society or both might make it out to be something unnatural and wrong. I should know, because I was brought up in an Arab/Islamic society.
I was against it myself, for a time, until I moved to Australia where religion doesn’t play such a huge role in people’s belief systems, and most Australians are perfectly okay with it. I found out that the only ones against it were the ones brought up to believe it was wrong, were un/misinformed, or have had bad experiences with homosexuals. You will find that the people who are against it will say that it is ‘wrong’ and ‘unnatural’, with weak and mostly religious-based arguments, in which case it would be the equivalent of shunning certain groups of people for choosing to eat pork, just because your religion says that it is a sin.
I feel this website explains beautifully the motivations for homophobia, especially under the “The real reasons people oppose gay marriage” section. It’s about marriage, specifically, but I still feel that it fits in:
Gay Marriage: The Arguments and the Motives
So, really, the people against it are either brought up to believe that way (what I call ‘brainwashed’), are just blindly following a faith where they can’t even be bothered to read the book properly, or are scared of what they don’t understand. The only people I feel could really be justified in being homophobic would be the ones who have had bad experiences, in which case it would be the same kind of fear against black people if the bad experience came from a black person. I was a homophobe until I found out that I was homosexual (notice I said ‘found out’, not ‘became’) and did some real, unbiased research to find out what it was all about at a certain point in my life where I chose to open my mind.
Because I didn’t cling onto my belief, and kept myself open to other ideas, I learned that homosexuals are normal, sane people, who are exactly like heterosexuals in every way except for the fact that they are attracted to the same sex, and that they are not given the same sort of respect. Homosexuals aren’t perverts, they aren’t rapists, they don’t have STIs, they’re not promiscuous, and they are all capable of loving and having long-term relationships just like heterosexuals. There are just as many, if not more heterosexuals who are perverts, rapists, have STIs and are promiscuous than there are homosexuals who are like that.
To all you homophobes out there, prove me wrong. Give me a real reason to hate homosexuals. Tell me, with complete conviction, that the reasons above aren’t the reasons why you are against homophobia. Ask any homosexual, and every single one of them will tell you that they did not choose to be that way, but that they merely discovered a part of themselves that was always there. The only people against it are those who do not understand it, who would rather believe what they are told the way little children would rather believe that it’s Santa Claus who brings them their presents at Christmas time.
It is good to finally see that not everyone in the Arab community would rather sit and suck their thumbs in their comfortable little reality, but rather wake up and face the real world. This is a great step up - finally, homosexual Arabs can turn to some of their own media that won’t, with a finger pointed, mouth frothing, eyes bulging, scream “you are a sin and an abomination and you will go straight to hell”, but rather, “you’re not abnormal, you’re not a sinner and you’re not alone.”
Homosexuality in the Arab world has existed for the longest time. Relationships between masters and apprentices were as common as during Ancient Greece. Traces of these “homosexual non-western” relationships can still be seen in a lot of small villages around the Arab world, and it is still accepted as a normal thing. Guilt with regards to homosexuality among Arabs really started with colonization and when Victorian standards, imposed on the natives, criminilized such an activity. We should not forget that at the turn of the century Oscar Wilde was himself a victim to the victorian witch hunt.
So Ironically being a homophobe is one of the legacies the Western world has left us. So if you are going to criticize homosexuality as a western trend, I urge you to do a little more reading. The world is not as black and white as Bush and Ben Laden want it to be.
Sure the Muslims are the majority today in Lebanon only because they bullied and finally drove the Maronite Christians out. The Maronites had to go..sophisticated & educated, Western & successful. Oh you jealous muslims.

It makes me sad to know that most jordanians are not tolerant. I am Jordanian myself.I still think Jordanians have a loooong way to go when it comes to sexuality rights. Way to go HELEM and ASWAT.
Am glad to see that there are at least some accepting people.
And am glad and so PROUD that this initiative of publishing a lesbian, gay bi mag comes from the lebanese.
Salam .
I’d like to respond to what Sarah so eloquently wrote.
First, there is a huge difference between “religion” and revelation. Religion is akin to man’s attempt to communicate with the Divine, while revelation is The Divine’s communication to man. Religion is mere tradition and ritual-and “man made” while revelation is not.
Second, homosexuality is not the sin. Sodomy is. Merely being homosexual is no more “sinful” than being vulnerable to ANY sort of sin is–it’s no more sinful than any person with a healthy libido who happened to be in the company of georgous people would be! It’s the thoughts and actions taken in those circumstances that constitute whether or not “sin” has occured.
One person might be an alcoholic–alcoholism isn’t sin anymore than homosexuality is–drunkenness is. The Tora says we have each gone our own way–all of us have strayed. Everyone is a “sinner” we all just have our own “issues”–and none of us is any better than any one else among us–NONE of “that” matters–what DOES matter is what The Divine thinks of all of this. He has given us His Revelation. He has communicated with us, and proved that communication real and true through miracles and prophecy fulfilled (as only He can do). What you, or I or anyone else merely mortal might think is irrelevant–what He has said IS.
So, is sodomy sin? Yes….but for the believing Christian, equally so is being angry with one’s brother without cause, and looking upon any person not one’s spouse with lust–according to the Ingil, either of those will get one roasted for eternity just as easily! It seems to me everyone needs to look less to his/her neighbors for answers, and more to The Divine–and make sure one is concerned only with what He thinks of us individually. After all, eternity is a strict pass/fail deal–we’re not going to be “graded on a curve” so how we compare to anyone else isn’t relevant–only how we fared taking into account what He revealed to us while we were here will matter.
Salam indeed!
Greetings to all. Reading comments here again furthers my belief that we who are homosexual by orientation, irrespective of ethnicity or religious belief/non belief, could be bridge builders making our world a more tolerant place.
I myself am European, Christian and in my 60s. Many gay men and women have suffered, indeed are still suffering through religious and political intolerance. I am a member of the Roman Catholic Church, I know that my Church has been intolerant, still is, but I remain within it as my choosen path of spirituality and religious living.May all of us who are children of Abraham work towards a more understanding world, am I wasting my time in dreaming of this? Maybe, maybe not but I am not alone in this dream. I greet all in the name of God. Blessing and peace to all.

“HELEM” May the dreams that fill your magazine be heard! To all that have hearts full of hate….WHO ARE YOU TO JUDGE? Who put you on this earth to say what is right or wrong for others? AND where is the man or woman that stood with Adam and Eve to know of their experience? You speak like your word is the word of God. Our path is difficult enough to walk. But it is our path! If we ask you to walk by our side then argue it is not your way of life. Are we taking food from your table? Or taking away the ones you love? Your hate comes from the lack of understanding. Your comments would be less predictable. Your words would carry more respect. And sorry would not be thrown around so lightly, like you just stepped on my toe!
Your words are powerful…use each one wisely. And think…maybe it is the heart of your son/daughter, brother or even mother that has once fallen in love with someone of the same sex. And if you knew LOVE, you would know it is a blessing unto itself. There would be no room for so much hate.
It is everybody’s right to have an opinion, be it thru publishing a magazine or a comment on a website; the thing is there are lot of gays or lesbians or whatever you may call it, and you have no idea who your parents were. in my opinion, you dont celebrate being a gay or lesbian, the God made you that way so you can function in a community with great influence, remember, being gay/lesbian is being intelligent. Thanks to all the gays/lesbians who make our world beautiful, othewise what an ugly, ugly planet this could be.
Congratulations on having the magazine. And to DJ nine-eleven. Quick consultation with two colleagues down the hall who are Ph.D.’s in psychology leaves me still not having any idea what you are talking about when you refer to Gender Perception Disorder in regard to homosexuality.
Gender Perception Disorder is defined as: “One of the major groups of sexual and gender identity disorders, characterized by a strong and persistent identification with the opposite sex (cross-gender identification) and discomfort with one’s assigned sex or a sense of inappropriateness in that gender role. Although onset is usually in childhood or adolescence, the disorder may not be presented clinically until adulthood. Manifestations include a repeated desire to be of the opposite sex, insistence that one has the typical feelings and reactions of the opposite sex, a belief that one was born the wrong sex, and transsexualism or preoccupation with one’s primary and secondary sex characteristics in order to simulate the opposite sex.”
Ummm… while transgendered persons believe themselves to be of the opposite gender; gay, lesbian and bisexual people do not.
Homosexuality is outward directed — one is attracted to other members of the same gender for romance and possibly for sex.
Transsexuality is inward directed — it is perception of the self TO THE EXCLUSION of what gender one is attracted to for sex.
While my terminal degree is not psychology — those whose terminal degree is in that field assure me, and my own experience in knowing people who are transgendered and people who are homosexual alike tell me that they are not the same thing.
I’m surprised that you didn’t know that.
Congratulations on your new venture. Homosexuality has always existed in the human race and in some animal species, including apes. It is a natural function and is probably determined at conception. However, if you remove a heterosexual man from his woman for several weeks he too, if in an all male environment, is likely to look for gay solace (I have practical experience)
As a non-muslim of European ancestry (i.e., Caucasian American) woman of advancing years, I do not know that I have anything of real value or relavance to add to this discourse. However, being a pushy American that will not stop me from adding my voice to the mix. That being said, let me offer my congratulations on this website and publishing venture. As a school teacher I am so encouraged by the young people of today as I see more and more of them opening up to new ideas, thoughts, and actions. There seems to be less intolerance in the minds of young people today and it gives me much hope for the future. When people learn to live beside each other with tolerance and an open heart the world will be much improved.
i agree with them …
they have their freedom to say what they want in their magazine so why some of people mad on them !
Want to start off by thanking everyone who contributed in making me wanna read more comments as i scrolled down the page.Pro-gay or Anti-gay it’s all the same for me in terms of the freedom of speech. The only thing is…It is not appropriate for any one in this world to say that being gay is “sick” ,”sinful”or “degrading” . I would accept the comments of people who are opposed to homosexuality if their comments were based on some personal experience. How dare a straight male/female say that the homosexual acts are sick? they haven’t tried it therefor they shouldn’t hate it. Perhaps avoid it but don’t hate it. Hey … if you don’t like gays just make sure u don’t end up marrying one. I’m part Lebanese and Part Saudi and I’m also gay.I have been gay ever since i was 5 years old . Yes people!!! 5 years OLD!. i used to fantasize about my male class mate in kindergarten, not in a sexual way of course, But in an innocent fairytalish kinna way. i used to day dream about him picturing him as my superman and I’d be the little girl trapped in a building which is about to explode. So i always kinna knew that I’m a special guy. simply coz i refuse to play soccer just to be a tough guy or simply to display my masculinity. i used to comfort my self in the fact that I’m secure with who i am.Now the hardest part for me when i was in Saudi Arabia is understanding the Agendas behind every man or woman who refer to religion as their benchmark. I learned in school that being gay is a sin. And unfortunately the teacher of religion who was supposedly the idol for every Muslim guy, used to make homophobic remarks to make his pupils even more intolerant about gays and lesbians. But i don’t wanna go into detail about religion and homosexuality because honestly i don’t believe in any of the religions at all. However i don’t deny the existence of the Divine god. I do believe in him and i ‘d like to believe I’m good terms with him coz only god can condemn me for my “sins” .Now ..back to saudi arabia , Saudi men don’t have access to women sexually unless they’re married to them. As a result , saudi men seek the company of young boys ,notice i said young boys not gay boys, to have sex with them in other words rape them:) yes people… that’s how f**cked up saudi men are. Now i’m not saying all saudis but it’s the majority. Those raped young boys either grow up to be gays coz it has effected them or they simply grow up being dysfunctional individuals. Now as a raped child my self i know that being raped has nothing to do with me being gay. i was gay long before that. But being raped in an early age does somehow effect children. Now Saudi Arabia did nothing about that. Sex is such a taboo that even raped children can’t feel safe enough to talk to their parents about it. I remember i once was with my mates in a coffee shop located in Tahlia street in Riyadh(capital of Saudi Arabia) . And in the table next to me i see this familiar face. But i couldn’t quite remember who he was. So i started thinking and when he laughed his voice shook me to the core. I was looking at the man who raped me 10 years ago.So i immediately told my friends i had to leave that place. And as i was passing by my raper’s table he said “Yo guys! look at that fucking faggot!”.:) HYPOCRISY is the best word to describe this man. Coz he raped a young boy and i’m sure he still does that yet he hates gays…EXCUSE ME ! BUT WHAT’S THAT ABOUT?.His comment was the cherry on top of my day .right then and there i swore i’d never stay in a homophobic country such as saudi arabia nor would i stay in any Islamic ruled country. Now i just laugh when i see/hear/read any homophobic comment because it just shows how uneducated and brainwashed people are. I have to say that Sara was right in all that she said about arrogance in the middle east and esp in Saudi Arabia. In Saudi Arabia they execute gays but they never execute gays from the royal family… wtf? now if it’s a “sin” why don’t u kill them too like the rest ? merely because the saudi Wahabi government is nothing but a joke. And the same can be applied to any other government In the Arab world. When i knew this magazine was being published i was sooooo proud and i cried for three days not believing what i’ve heard. To be able to be recognized is a privilege. And no one has the rights pry it from us.You can accept that the sky is blue. You can accept that the grass is green and you can also accept that a girl sleeps with a boy because she loved him but why can’t u accept homosexuality? It’s been there ever since .And HOMOSEXUALITY btw started in non other than arabia just so ya’ll know. Most of the well known arab poets were gay and in their poems they addressed men but after they died Fundamental Muslims changed it and made their poems directed towards women . See how the Islamic and Arabic History was built by hypocrisy? … i can go on and on when it comes to defending the rights of gays and lesbians but i think one hand can’t clap without the other. I ask of all the homophobic people to educate themselves and do some research and when i say research i mean get ur ass moving and read books about homosexuality. You will always have the rights to be with or against gays but only if you have truly done your homework. In other words don’t just talk coz u can talk coz u know. Finally, please please no more gay bashing a friend of mine died last year in saudi arabia because he was brutally gay bashed. Killing and hurting is not the solution.
PEACE YA’LL AND MAY YA’LL LIVE AND LET LIVE
Well someone have mentioned that Jordians aren’t tolerant at all.. Well regarding the Gay/Lesbian issue, i really do belive that no one should be tolerant about it..
But at the end, listening to Gay people trying to make sense about their sexuality makes me wonder “How sick are they?!”
Gay people realize that they are different, they know they are weird, and they believe it is their right… but stil they cant see they are sick. So i’m only wondering, why dont they go f**k themselves in another planet?! or why dont they just get convinced and stop what they’re doing before the fires of hell consumes them?!

ah, how come no pics? this isn’t a good thing w/o pics.
by zionist propaganda do u mean the LGBT types aren’t persucted by tbe state in Isreal? Just thought i would ask. you ask for tolerance and are unwilling to give any.
well I’m gay and I’m 18 years old but I’m ready for tolerance!!!!
well, i say u guys need to wake up ‘n repent to the Lord from this filth u’re tryin to spread in this region. we here in lebanon Maronites, muslims, Catholics and Durz stand up in total oppostion againts you and your pro-western funded filthy ,disgusting and sick orgnization, we pray into the Lord Jesus Christ cleanse your souls and heal your hearts and guide you back to the prefect image you were created to present, the image of God not of anmimal.
and one more thing! this poofter buisness is not the failt of God! so don’t u dare blame your distored and confused sexuality on him.
cuz when God said let there be man, he made sure this man he is abt to create doesn’t feel lonely by creating another human for him called Eve
so this is how the equation goes Adam+ Eve= normal human relationship
Adam+Steve = HIV anf digrace which results animal-like lifestyle.
now the choice is urs to make.
let people live the way they want and lets mind our selves
@Sarah - I support your educated and thorough approach to this subject. I would like to increase the validity of it with a simple concept that I came to realize, and saves all educated people a brief solution to the question of Homosexuality. ‘Are you familar with emperical wisdom? It is simply the type of knowledge gained through first-hand experience, through vision, hearing, or maybe even experience. It is undesputed and best of all, it is the most valid form of evidence one can have to dismiss despute, and theory… I am gay, I exist, and so therefore if I tell someone that I am inherently gay, I come from the voice of emperical wisdom on this subject and so therefore the subject can not be desputed’- Domaine de Valier
