Gender-Based Violence in Egypt

by Haitham Sabbah on 10/17/2005

A couple of days ago, I quoted this newspaper which said that UN report states that 94 per cent of Egyptian women are victims of domestic violence, but I could not verify this from original sources. Well, hat tip to Lali Sandiumenge who send me the link to the report, which you can find it in http://www.unfpa.org/. It is called "State of world population 2005 The promise of Equality: Gender & Reproductive Health". The chapter about domestic violence is in http://www.unfpa.org/swp/2005/english/ch7/

Gender-Based Violence

However, as Lali brought to my attention that the report doesn't say that 94% of Egyptian women are victims of domestic violence, instead it says that 94% of Egyptian woman believe wife beating is justified for at least one reason. See above Fig.

Sorry, Ritzy. I feel shy :-)

But don’t blame me. I monitor more than 200 blogs and news sources a day, on top of another +280 emails a day :-(

Anyway, promise to keep closer track ;-)
