So who won the Prospect/FP Global public intellectuals poll? It’s Noam Chomsky, with amazing 4827 votes out of the 20,000 people voted for their top five names from a longlist of 100.
Shirin Ebadi - the Iranian human rights and democracy activist, and a lawyer - who was awarded 2003’s Nobel Peace Prize, came 12th. While Pope Benedict XVI in 17th position, Ali al-Sistani in 30th, the Somali lady, Ayaan Hirsi Ali in 46th, the modern Muslim scholar and preacher Yusuf al-Qaradawi in 56th, the Islamic academic and scholar, Tariq Ramadan in 58th, the Palestinian professor of philosophy and president of the Arab Al-Quds University in Jerusalem, Sari Nusseibeh in 65th.
If someone is missing from that list, I would say it should be the lay preacher Amr Khaled.

I’m not sure if Amr Khaled can be categorized in the same group as the rest of the people listed. He’s not really an intellectual… he’s a “lay preacher” as you correctly point out. All the others are trained scholars in their respective disciplines.
Some very interesting survery results though.
Amr Khaled? This guy is huge. I heard he had to relocate to Lebanon because of the waves he was making in Egypt? Someone said he got Mubarak’s daughter to put on her hijab? He is a great speaker. Theyguys where I go to Friday prayers with talk about him all of the time.
I don’t know what type of people were polled that more than 1,000 of them think that Paul Wolfowitz is an “intellectual.”
