How come?
Well, last few days were hard on my server load. But last night I noticed that the numbers of visitors to my blog exceeded 11K. This has never happened to me. The blog average number of visitors these days are +2K a day, and with 11K, you are talking about number nearly equal to Global Voices visitors a day. It can’t happen all of a sudden. Something fishy is going on!
So, I went down the logs of visitors and started analyzing and searching until I found the reason. It all started when an article about Wafa Bin Laden (a.k.a. Wafah Dufour) was published, which says that she is posing her #^&$ to GQ Magazine as their model for January 2006 issue. From there onward, everyone started searching for her nakkked, nuuude, pooorn, seeex (sorry, had to do this for search engine) photos. And of course, because I wrote about her here and here, so you can guess that my blog name is in the list of most (if not all) search engines. In fact, if you search her name in Google, you will get my blog as the first result (shiiit).
So, the crowed went mad looking for her ass, and I had to pay for that.
Well, since this is the case, and it’s all about her, and while everyone and their brother is scouring the Internet today for her pictures - you can take that to the bank. One here, too!

Now Wafah Dufour is doing an interview and cover photo for GQ in an attempt to boost her career. Apparently it’s not easy being the sexy bin Ladin:

I’m not the sort of person that normally posts comments on blogs, but this, I believe, deserved some sort of response.
I read an article about the girl in the GDN (Bahraini daily), was curious, pulled a search, and here I am. A few comments here, really provoked me into making this rambling monologue. This one, in particular, sums it up rather nicely…

What a lot people don’t realise when offering so called ‘rational’ and ‘reasonable’ (dare I say, tolerent and moderate?) comments on such issues is this simple fact: The judgements they make are based on THEIR value system, and that their value system (while absolutely perfect for them) is NOT universally accepted.
Yes. You’re right. In Arab or generally eastern society, such photographs and such pictures in general would be considered ’slutty’ or ‘bitchy’. And it is the right of everyone within a society to contribute towards establishing the values within it.
But one should understand, and one should know, that values in other cultures could (and more to the point, are) be diferrent.
According to the ethos and the cultures Ms. Bin Laden has chosen to live her life, which is generally shared by the country and society she lives in (exceptions of course, always present), she has done NOTHING wrong. A vast cross section of that society believes that there is nothing wrong with alcohol indulgence, baring some amount of skin, premarital sex, etc etc.
Try and keep in mind that other cultures are vastly different when it comes to the values inherent in them.
Just a small example, the culture between Bahrain and Saudi itself is so greatly different.
What is wrong for you… might not be wrong for everyone else.
With that in mind… Why did she do it? Most likely becuase she wanted to.
If you still have trouble focusing on the concept… think in terms of Miami beach and all those women in skimpy bikinis. Do you hear someone yelling, “SLUT!!” at the top of their voices? No. Why? Becuase, according to THEM, its not wrong to behave that way.

I agree with you, probably everyone does too. The problem is not in her choice to do this or that, after all, as you said these values are sort of normal in the west.
The problem is in the media (or her), which intentionally keeps on linking her to here origin and original values and society. Did she or the media miss to do that? Never. They always link.

And again, you’re right, wherever she is put into the public spotlight by the media, Islam/the Arab world is definitely brought up.
It IS very possible that the woman is doing this on purpose, intentionally, (or really, lacks the intelligence to avoid it altogether - don’t know her, can’t say), after all, that’s a hell of a lot of publicity that a musician really could use (being a musician myself, I can see that happening). However, we don’t KNOW, for sure.
On the otherhand… the media, wester, eastern, whatever, media is a hungry wolf that is LOOKING for a story. A tragedy happens, they’re there, filming every agonizing moment of it. They film it all, they write it all, the more risque or catchy the story seems to be, the more desperately and invasively, they’re going to exploit it. I have, once again, worked in the media in the past and I’m well acquainted with these people. I’ve seen them in action.
Any sort of journalist… the reference to Osama bin Laden, Islam, the Arab culture, would be unavoidable. After all, this is his niece, living life so differently. Sounds like a story eh? While that interview quotes what she said… it doesn’t say what questions the reporters asked. For example..
Q1: How did you feel about 9/11?
A: I cried horribly. It was terrible.
Q2, Q3, Q4…
Q5: What do you think about dating, and how do muslim men fit in the picture?
A: I’d never date a fundamentalist muslim man.
(obviously, she has NO idea what fundamentalist muslim men are like, or she’d know that they don’t ‘Date’.)
I think its not so much of a question of having her leave us alone. I thinks its a question of the American media AND the American people leaving us alone.
America is the so called bastion of democracy, equity, freedom, etc, in the modern world. America is also the country which allowed the vast majority of black and creole people of New Orleans to suffer while almost all the wealthy white population was safely whisked away during the flooding of the city after Katrina.
It is the country that assassinated people like Martin Luther King Jr. and condemned Rubin Carter to a life in prison.
America, might be a whatever it claims to be, but there are STILL a LOT of people in the US that hold to prejudice, and muslims and arabs living in America have suffered a lot since 9/11. I don’t think this woman has it easy either.
I do not believe THEY will let her forget where she comes from, who her family is, and what her religious background should be.
So to sum up another long comment (sorry about that), she MIGHT be at fault, by unfairly using the publicity her background affords her. We don’t know.
But the American media, DEFINITELY is to blame for this.

Ali, its a debate, everyone has his/her point of view. I agree that what seem wrong for the east might not be wrong for the west. There a lot of muslims living in US and Europe who have molded themselves into western culture and adopted their lifestyles, why aren’t we discussing them? Because they are atleast not publicizing it. what my point of view is that what difference could it have made had she appeared in a photo shoot in some decent outfit? What did she want to prove by those pictures? Maybe no one from the muslim community would have got enraged had she done so infact she would have got their support too and said yes the poor girl is suffering for her uncle’s doings.
Secondly it was her remarks in different interviews that she was happy to leave the Islamic culture (didnt use this phrase but she meant this). Why is she relating all this to the religion? If someone goes for something against his/her religion its his/her own point of view, that wouldnt mean religion was wrong. She herself has caused all this trouble to her. I would agree with you on the point that she IS stupid.
I would say “live your life in anyway you like but dont blame your religion, adopt any culture you want but dont criticize other cultures”.

I just got the chance to see this angel–Wafah Dufour. She is a vision. The controversy about her family and the articles, as well as her intense beauty have convinced me to buy her albums. I believe we are all on a new path in history, one where everyone can realize their individual dreams, and be rewarded for being themselves, right here, right now in this day. This woman is incredibly beautiful. I will skip the caymans next year and visit the middle-east instead!

If she hadnt come out with it herself then who would know that she was related to him, except those nearest to her. and those should know better or will certainly not change their mind because of this publication. A MESSAGE TO MANKIND:Wafa Dufour Bin Laden is the perfect example for a Muslim that strays from Islam. It’s very hard to imagine that people like her call themselves Muslim. Yet Islam is neither too strict not too loose. It is the perfect religion, and people need to understand this. I’m not completely evident on who committed 911, but it was surely an incident that was rejected by Allah. As mentioned in many parts of the Qur’an, a Muslim is only to fight when they have no choice or when they are trying to defend Islam. Also, Allah has not told us to rely on the Hadith. The coming of the Hadith was never mentioned in the Qur’an. Allah has only told us to find out the true meaning of Islam through the Qur’an and to follow the prophet’s (peace be upon him) sunnat, which can be understood in the Qur’an itself. A majority of Muslims read from Hadith, a book written by people. Allah didn’t say to put aside the Qur’an and learn Islam by reading from the Hadith, a book written by people. He wants us to read from the Qur’an, thus the Hadith was not influenced by Allah or the Angel Jibriil, so why do people follow the Hadith? Everything can be found in the Qur’an itself. Because of so much influence from the Hadith on Muslims these days, they make it seem like Islam is strict, but as I said before Islam is neither too strict not too loose, and all answers can be found ing the Qur’an. A majority of the Muslims in this present time period have been straying from Islam and have been disobeying many commands written in the Qur’an. It was mentioned in the Qur’an that a few Muslims from older times and a few from later times will be of the Right Hand. Is this coming true? Yes, because there are very few people who completely follow every passage in the Qur’an these days. And there are very few people who reject the Hadith. These will be the people of the Right Hand. This life is surely a test from Allah and to see that a majority of the Muslims follow the Hadith must be a major test for Muslims from Allah. Because people most-likely do what the majority of the Muslims do. So the few who follow their heart and do only what Allah has told them to do and are not drawn by the majority will be of the Right Hand. Near Judgment Day, a majority of people, including Muslims will be part of Hazbe’Shaithan (Party of Shaytan) and a few will be part of Hazballah (Party of Allah).

Many believe that the word Jihad means “to destroy the west and kill innocent people,” but they have a misunderstanding. Jihad means “to strive or to struggle (in the cause of Allah [most gracious, most merciful])” One can be in a Jihad when they are fighting in Allah’s cause to protect the religion of Islam. It can also be associated with someone who tries to avoid murder, lies, and other sinful acts. Prophet Mohammad (pbuh) was the perfect human and the best example for a Muslim. He was a peace-loving man that struggled to protect his religion. Even in times of war, he allowed himself to pass Allah’s mercy to many of his enemies. When he and his men captured their enemies, they would not torture them or interrogate them, rather they would allow them to return to their lands or teach them about Islam without force. This is the grace and mercy of Islam that has allowed many Muslims to succeed. May Mohammad’s (pbuh) message of Islam continue to spread throughout the world through Allah’s grace and mercy. Insha’Allah the disbelievers will see the truth and the Muslims will live in peace.

Islam is the second biggest religion on earth,for some funny reason the west fail to understand that if islam is the terror they associate it with,there’ll be a constant world war and nobody will survive,western people visite and live in such places like Egypt,morrocco,algeria,sudan,lebanon,chad,tunisia,saudi arbia,oman,jordan.how can they do that if islam is about terrorism.how come nobody associates christianity with the kkk,because we are literate enough to know and understand not to judge a religion by a minority’s acts of human tendency to evil.allah says whoever kills a human,it’s as if he killed humanity,and whoever saves a life is as if he saved humanity. allah taught us to say “oh you who dont beleive,i worship not what you worship,and you worship not what i worship,and i shall not worship what you worship,you have your religion and i have mine”.When a muslim greets,he says peace be upon you(not just to a muslim but to any human)such is the teaching of our profet.it’s true that he went to war,but so did any civalization.He was a leader.
