The New Media: Bloggers and Participatory Journalism

Written by Haitham Sabbah on 29. January 2006, 2004hrs // Part of Haitham Sabbah's adventure in Blogging, Media, Qatar, Sabbah // Other posts by Haitham Sabbah

Moblogging (Photos) will fireup this blog again, starting from tomorrow. Blogging will be light for the next few days and this is due to my travel to Qatar to participate in the 2nd annual Aljazeera Forum (Arabic), which this year has the theme “Defending Freedom, Defining Responsibility.”

2nd annual Aljazeera ForumI’ll be one of the panelists at the Forum. In particular the “The New Media: Bloggers and Participatory Journalism” panel. It’s hosted by Veronica Pedrosa (now of Aljazeera International)

The New Media: Bloggers and Participatory Journalism

This panel will deal with new media such as the phenomena of blogging and participatory journalism. Participants will analyze the effects of “new media” on traditional journalism and discuss the increasing role of the independent voice. Does the appearance of new media indicate a collapse of public trust in mainstream forms? Are traditional media institutions responding to the expectations of their audiences? How have new media transformed the media field and what are the next steps in their development?

Moderator: Veronica Pedrosa - News and Program Presenter, Al Jazeera International

Panelists:

Wednesday February 1st, 2006
14:30 – 16:00 (Qatar local time), 11:30 - 13:00 GMT

Other panels include “The World Media: Building Bridges of Understanding or Creating Divisions.” It’s hosted by Riz Khan (now of al-Jazeera International); another one on “Journalism at the Crossroads: Who Defines Professional Ethics?”, hosted by Muhammad Krichane - News Presenter and Host of “Behind the News,”- Al Jazeera; “Challenges to News Organizations in the 21st Century”, hosted by Jumana al-Namour; “The Media and Power: Freedom of Expression and Political Manipulation”, Faisal Al Kasim - Host of “The Opposite Direction” - Al Jazeera; and several others you can find here (Arabic). The whole thing is being broadcast on Al Jazeera Mubashir TV.
