It is to find a "Beauty Queen".
On April 9, Tamar Goregian, a Christian woman, made history as the first Armenian Iraqi to be crowned Miss Iraq. The 23-year-old, who was the first Armenian Iraqi to win the Miss Iraq pageant, announced her resignation after receiving threats by a group of extremists who referred to her as "the queen of infidels" for participating in the contest.
Last night it was left to the fourth-placed contestant, Silva Sahagian, 23, another Christian, to assume the mantle.
"Our politicians should have more to worry about than whether Miss Iraq should go to America," she said. "I cannot believe the extremists would do anything to a beauty queen." A civil engineering student in Baghdad, she added: "I want to show the world Iraq has beauty and education and talent instead of just bloodshed."
Silva Sahagian, received the title of "Miss Iraq" when the initial first place winner stepped down and two other Muslim runner-ups also bowed out.
If she competes, she will be the first Iraqi delegate sent to the Miss Universe Pageant since 1972, and Shahakian is determined to make the trip.
"I will take care. I will change my living place," Shahakian affirmed. "I would like to take that chance. I will do my best."
Well, Miss Iraq as a job calls for courage more than just beauty, and this girl seems to have the courage.

Yes, Tamar doesn't look like as I think that she's Iraqi, but for example, I chatted with some Arabs and they think that we Italians have generally dark hair, eyes and so on (it happens expecially in South), instead we can be blonde and having clear eyes:)

It is clearly an action by the tyrannical George W. Bush to pick a blonde winner. He is trying to spread Western concepts of beauty as a way to overhaul the culture in the Middle East and eventually infiltrate it and, ultimately, take over, turning the Arab world into Los Angeles. Or Texas. :-D

I left Iraq in 1974, hoping some day I will return to see it beautiful as Miss Iraq, however, it seems I will have to postpone my return for another 30 years because the current beauty of best country in the world is vailed with uglyness.
I think Miss.Iraq is just a political game to show that World that Iraq is free and open, like what happened to Miss.Afghanistan, same same old game.

i for one never blamed the US government per say. however as a citizen of the US i will be first in line to criticize if i have to. u cannot deny that the US has its hand in iraq- this has always been US foriegn policy. look at its history with latin america, for example. so yes, i will critcize the west, and i will also criticize the fanatics (the west has those too). again, my orginal intent in posting was simply asking who sets the standard (weight, complexion, etc) for beauty on a global scale? why does everyone want to look like britney spears? as i said, these questions are being asked here in the US as well.
I have watched a few beauty contests at least 30 years ago.
My wife does not fit into any of these catagories. She is beautiful to me. She is not a skinny, with no hips female. She does not have big boobs.
Here-in is the problem. The NA way of looking at women has now become the world view.
But the funny part is that most American women don't fit into the view of these contests.
I married my wife because I loved her. The heck with the ideal view of the ideal woman. The ideal woman is a myth created by business and the media.
If the average American man wants an ideal woman according to the media, he has a small package to pick from.
Most women are average with no big boobs (an American obsession) and slightly over weight.
No wonder the Iraqis are upset. The guidlines are the US guidlines.

as organizer of the event i would like to say that the Pageant was held on April 5th and the resignation took place on April 9th becuase of some irresponsible individual who spread rumours that ben laden wants her head and offered some money etc
pageants arent new and this pageant started in 1947 and most of the winners are non arab, and even the muslims ones, i think from 1990 till 2006 we have had 2 arab winners only in 1995 and 1996
and Iraq isnt just Arab, and please stop this false pretense about the violence which is caused by Arabs and Moslems and yes there are white blone Iraqis because many of us arent ARAB.

and if Arabs or Muslims choose to not participate then oh well, the pageant will go on and the reason why i brought it backto Iraq is so that i can qualify for Miss Universe, but we will compete in Miss Earth instead.

I actually think the topic was great because it was about a woman having her life threatened and another who took her place and is determined to go on but as I started reading down and it began veering off course into a bush-bashing (which I am ALWAYS up to, but I think you're bashing for the wrong reason)
I got really confused. How did the conversation go so off course? Tamar had her life threatened for God's sake because of the radicals which have been unleashed. THAT is certainly more important than trying to say that the American idea of beauty has somehow been forced onto a beauty pagent in Iraq. I am NO fan of beauty contests but I would never stoop to the level as some of the above posters did in saying she's not beautiful anyways and it's an American beauty ideal in this contest. Sorry, If you carefully observe the Iraqi Pageant History you will realize that we have had like 2 Arab winners and that was because they are like from the Iraqi Arab Elite who have lived most of their lives outside of Iraq.
then we have instances where a distant family member complains , hello this pageant conforms to INTERNATIONAL STANDARDS and SWIMSUITS are part of it, we make sure the girls are comfortable, and also they can wear a sarong if they choose to and they select the choice of one piece bathing suit or two.
When I brought the Pageant back in Iraq this year, which i thought that i can change peoples views, help them and raise money to make a change in the lives of orphans and create a campaign against rape and other issues, you wont believe that all we get is rejection. the moment they hear beauty queen, they run as if i am some monster spy organization that is threatening ARAB CULTURE.

and yeah with an Arab girl the reign never goes smoothe, they cant do this and that and they cant go out unless they have a parents permission or they cant tarvel freely, they dont attend this and that function and they dont like the charity work and they dont want to do public and motivational speaking, and they usually declare after winning that they dont wish to go to MISS UNIVERSE OR MISS WORLD.
they are after getting a sash, a crown and having guys chase them and then when they sign the contract they suddenly decide after 4 months that they want to get married, specifically when the contract requires you to stay single throughout the year.
and in 2001 when we had a Kurdish girl grace our title then 3 weeks later, we discover that she was married for 3 months and had the marriage annulled, then she had a fiance and she wanted to keep the title and wear a veil, sorry that doesnt work
maybe you should start your own contest where you can implement your rules.
This would never have happened in the 1980's and the 70's and previosus eras.
I dont question other peoples cultures but I will stand up for my business and defend these girls.
especially when you have a form and then have someone explain to you what you are getting yourself into and then you violate almost every rule.
I have seen these girls enter and after their reign is over, theyhave done very well in their lives and almost all of them are very successful women in their own field of choice.
This war that is being waged against the Pageant wont do any of you any good, the pageant will continue and if I continue to get head ache from Islamo arabs, i will be left with NO choice but to ban them from entry and or insert another special form for Arab girls / Muslims who wish to enter and interview them in person before they are accepted into this competition.
I regret that Tamar has made a decision in a rapid manner, but i do understand her stance, and im sure she will do very welel in her filed and line of work, and Silva is an awesome titleholder, its a shame that we cant send her to the Miss Universe Pageant, but i know a tribute will be paid to her at the July 23rd festival and hopefully she will win MISS EARTH and make all THE CIVILIZED IRAQIS proud.

please use yoru website for educating people and stop the blood shed and all the atrocities in Iraq, I did my share and last year even when the Pageant was held outside Iraq, in Kenya, I managed to raise over 100,000 US$ for Iraqi shelter homes, and orphanages and homes for the elderly and where did my money go, into the pockets of the administrators of these homes, and even the stuff we bought for them like split units and generators for iraq's hot summers, they had them installed and when i sent some ordinary guy over to check they were all gone.
plus when i met with some Islamic clerics to start a new idea and campaign where mosques could get involved and instead of giving us all a headache every friday with the talks of hate and a screaming competition, i suggested that they start a new campaign where at least in ramadhan the people in every neighbourhood would send one dish to the mosque and have an open house and offer free meals for the underprivileged and also people can stack up stuff and clothes that they dont use and send em over to churches, mosques etc and hand them to the poor, well in Iraq the word CHARITY doesnt exist.

Hi Sarah Mendley, you should enter Miss Universe Uk, if you are between 18 and 27 you can enter the British preliminary for Miss Universe, the package at Miss Universe is alot better than that of Miss World.
