The traditional dish made of lettuce, tomato, olive oil, cracked wheat and mint is a new record for the dish, according to organisers of the culinary achievement.

I LOVE tabouleh!!!! I could dive right in and swim in this big luscious bowl!!! But better yet, share it with about 10,000 Palestinians and stand shoulder to shoulder in SOLIDARITY!!!

Absurd. I hope they invited kids from the local refugee camps to a big meal after this photo was taken.
is tabooleh what is hot on the PL menu now or is it the kick off of the civil war? Priorities are a bit astray here.

I guess I didn't think of it being absurd. I looked at it as trying to make everday life go on and in this case coming together to celebrate food. It's the part of me that always wants to look at the glass half full, rather than half empty. But I apologize if I made light of something. I absolutely can see that all is going to hell in a hand basket so to speak. Maybe these people just wanted to get their minds off everything by just getting together in shell-shocked celebration, and do something silly. I think sometimes people just react in different ways to divert their pain. I apologize if I was innappropriate.
That's okay. On second thought, everyday life in Palestine is completely absurd. A giant bowl of tabouleh is a welcome reprieve from that.
I am very sorry if I responded inappropriately in my above post #1. And without making any excuses for my inappropriate response which WAS absurd, I would like to clarify a little. When I saw the post I saw a big bowl of green tabouleh. I emphasize GREEN and also taboulleh which is national dish and one I really do like. I saw some people standing around and trying to beat a world's record (which I think is silly under any circumstances) in a nice clean room. What is going on outside that room in the streets surrounding is a very different story and something none of us can deny. But my "glass-half full" way of analyzing it compares it to a forest after a fire. If you have ever seen a picture of a tree left unharmed, you look at it in wonder. How was that tree spared? Should we knock that tree down because it didn't parish with the rest, and it had the audacity to remain? Now maybe this isn't a thorough analogy because we have people here in a room who have to leave that room and go back to their dire everyday existance, that is a fact. But I for one look at this big bowl of tabouleh as a symbol of the indefatigable spirit of THESE particular people who are doing something to get their minds off of their everyday existance. It may be absurd considering the circumstances and it was a really inappropriate thing to do, but the SPIRIT that is still alive and represented in a big bowl of green was what my reaction was to. Now that they have spent a lot of time and effort on this display, maybe it's time for them to go home. I pray in my own heart that the spirit of the Palestinian people will NEVER be broken and all can soon live in safety and peace.

While your apologies are kind, they are unnecessary. It's the world's largest bowl of parsley, tomatoes, onions and bulghar. The peasants' food. If it takes a giant bowl of Palestinian cuisine for people to realise that the Palestinians are human beings, so be it.
Raymond, Is this story really being reported to the western media? Whoa, I just answered my own question by seeing it is a Reuters story. You are absolutely correct, it's just a big bowl of salad. I sometimes have a way of over-analyzing things I guess and see symbols where maybe it's just tabouleh!! (well at least the picture shows humans identified as Palestinians gathered around it and they're not the "usual suspects"-some actually try to break world's records. Yep, those Palestinians sure know how to make one big bowl of peasants food.) I'm beginning to understand now where the irony is. Thanks for helping me to understand that. I will never ever let go of hope for the Palestinian people.

Don't be too sensitive chief. You'all did well. Nobody is critisizing you, on the contrary. We welcome your efforts as it shows the bright side, which has, sadly, become rare these days. As much as I was pleased to read about your massive Tabouleh dish, as much as I am displeased with seeing your country men killing each other over a power struggle. Again, don't be offended, as offense was not what was intended here.
Good luck and let's see a homos or mtabal or fatoosh dish springing soon alongside of your Tabooleh.
