Meanwhile, the Israeli terrorists continue their attack on the democratic State of Palestine, and Amnesty International is confirming what the world failed to see: "Israeli attacks on Gaza Strip are war crimes"

Deliberate attacks by Israeli forces against civilian property and infrastructure in the Gaza Strip violate international humanitarian law and constitute war crimes, Amnesty International said today.

"Israel must now take urgent measures to remedy the long-term damage it has caused and immediately restore the supply -- at its own cost -- of electricity and water to the Palestinian population in the affected areas," urged the organization. "As the occupying power, Israel is bound under international law to protect and safeguard the basic human rights of the Palestinian population."

The deliberate destruction of the Gaza Strip's only electricity power station, water networks, bridges, roads and other infrastructure is a violation of the Fourth Geneva Convention and has major and long-term humanitarian consequences for the 1.5 million inhabitants of the Gaza Strip.

Almost half of Gaza's inhabitants are now without electricity and water supplies have also been cut in several areas both by the lack of electricity, necessary to operate the water pumps used to extract and deliver water, and by the destruction of water mains as a result of the bombings of bridges and roads.

The extensive damage caused by Israeli artillery and air strikes against these facilities in recent days is estimated at several millions of US dollars and will require months of work to repair. Unless alternative emergency measures are promptly put in place to restore electricity and water supply the consequences could be dire for the health of the Palestinian population.

In a statement the Israeli army said that it had: carried out an aerial attack on an electricity transformer station south of Gaza city. and that "The IDF will continue to employ all means at its disposal against Palestinian terrorist infrastructure in the Gaza Strip in order to ensure the quick and safe return home of Corporal Gilad Shalit."

The destruction by Israeli forces of bridges and roads is slowing down, but not preventing movement between different areas of the Gaza Strip. It is likely to cause severe restrictions on movement during the rainy season in a few months time. At present, it causes disruption to Palestinians civilians, who have to take long detours to reach their workplace, but it does not prevent the movements of armed groups - Israel's stated objective.

As the tension between Israel and the Palestinian Authority (PA) and armed groups continues to mount, there is growing concern for the safety of the civilian population. High numbers of Palestinian bystanders, including women and children, have been killed and injured by Israeli artillery shelling and air strikes in recent weeks and months. This situation looks set to worsen in light of the end of the unilateral cease-fire which the armed wing of Hamas and other Palestinian armed groups had been observing since last year.

"The hostage-taking of Corporal Gilad Shalit, and the killing of Eliyahu Asheri, the 18 year old settler, by Palestinian armed groups violate fundamental principles of international law. Corporal Gilad Shalit should be released immediately and unharmed."

"Both sides to this current stand-off should refrain from taking actions which violate international law and should take steps to provide redress for the abuses they have committed. The international community, also has an obligation under the Geneva Conventions, to act," said Amnesty International.

Notes to Editors
According to the Fourth Geneva Convention, "collective penalties and likewise all measures of intimidation or of terrorism are prohibited" (article 33) as is the destruction of private or public property, "except where such destruction is rendered absolutely necessar by military operations" (Article 53). The Convention requires all states party to it to search for and ensure the prosectution of perpetrators of the war crime of "causing extensive destrucdtion ... not justified by military necessity and carried out unlawfully and wantonly". "Intentionally directing attacks against civilian objects" is also a war crime under Article 8 (b) (ii) of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court.

Dear Palestine,
I just read an email from a little girl to her friend Lena. I am so very concerned for her welfare and the welfare of all your people. I am an American who is not only cognizent of your dire situation but also stands with you in your solidarity as a nation of proud and beautiful people. I have lived in the Middle East before and have many Palestinian and other Arab friends as well as family. Every day I say prayers for your people that you might one day enjoy the peace and safety that every child of God should have. If I could reach out to each and every one of you with my mother’s arms in protection, I would do that. This morning when I attend mass, I will be giving all my prayers up to God so that they might come to you. I will continue to send letters to Congress and to talk to anyone who will listen about your plight. If they do not want to listen, I will say more prayers that God will open their hearts and ears to your needs. In all that I do, I will pray for you, send you my love from deep in my soul and stand with you from here in my home country which is so much responsible for your condition. May our prayers be carried up to God/Allah and his ever loving mercy bring an end to your suffering. May peace be upon you.
With you I stand, Robin

O haitham,

All the brothers sitting and watching around the world. I hope you atleast wakeup before it is your own sister or mother being raped and executed. Shame on all the muslims around the world for cooperating with the west and providing them all the resource to slaughter us. It is already late, there are numerous stories that come to light which have been suppressed. If president bush want flesh and blood or women’s body or is his thirst for blood of children please do not bury the body of your children, send them to white house with out cleaning with all the blood. Shame on you people, you cannot even protect your own mothers and sisters from these crusaders.

This post is exactually what we here in NA don’t hear.
The truth is what will hurt us.
Bush has control of the media.
Do you think that the next government will relinquist this control?
NO!
Once they have the control they will keep it.
The US is becoming a Fascist state only interested in protecting big business to keep them in control because their money keep them in control.
And to keep a Fascist government in power they have to have a war to fight.
Terrorism, Iran, North Korea or someone else that Bush hates?
The US is becoming bankrupt in finance and morals.
G(g)od help us all!

adam, funnily enough I was talking to hal about that yesterday, and how I am wondering if Itoot should kick me out, given that, well, my views are not exactly in sync with the majority of people there. Hal retorted that i shouldn’t leave Itoot because 1) was one of the first blogs there, 2) a diversity of views presented on Itoot would actually be a good thing, and 3) My blog is actually a pretty good one. Reasons 1 and 3 non withstanding, I find that reason #2 is actually a very good one. If anything, we at the middle-east sufer from our inability to accept other people’s opinions, especially of they vary with our own. You, my friend, are an awesome example of that.

However, let’s humor the idea that this isn’t really about the soldier and that the israelis are really out to kill all plaestinains. Fine. Ok, let me ignore the fact that they can carpet bomb all of ghaza in 30 minutes, kill everyone who lives there, and no one would be able to do anything about it, because the arab countries will not go to war, the UN will issue a resolution, and the “zionist-controlled” US will veto it (Gee, why haven’t they just killed all the palestinians already then? World opinion getting mad at them? Yeah, cause they are so popular anyway). Let’s ignore this and actually humor that idea. Israel wants all palestinians dead. Fine. Why give them the excuse to carry out their plans? You have a neighbour that is vastly superior in strnegth to you and wants you dead, and can get away with it if given the excuse. Why go and kidnap his son and give him a legitimate excuse to kill you? Why insist on hiding that son in the family house knowing that when he comes in he will destroy, hurt or kill any family member that gets in his way? How retarded do you have to be to do that?

Listen, the Hamas government put its ideology over the best inetrest of the people, and it has been suffering ever since. It, by sanctioning the kidnapping and holding of that kid, has given the israelis all the excuse they needed to attack their people. Their policies and actions have lead to the starvation and endangering of the palestinians living in Ghaza. I realize that the palestinians have democratically elected it by choice, so in a way they are reaping what they have sowed. I just hope they won’t be stupid enough to make that same mistake again the next election. Hamas may be a nice fun terrorist organization to have around, but they can’t govern worth of shit, and any 6 year old with half a brain should be able to see that by now.

If you have come to this site in search of news concerning the situation in Gaza you will learn that there is much suffering being experienced by the civilian population there. At times like these, the children are particularly vulnerable. Many are lying in hospitals suffering from wounds incurred in this present situation which has been going on particularly hard since the shelling on the beach of Gaza by an Israel missile ?gone astray? which killed seven members of one family. There are children in the hospitals in Gaza suffering from all sorts of health afflictions who are not receiving the medicines they need. My premature babies are at risk of dying as well as severely ill children. The power plants have been bombed and the water is in great shortage. No matter what your politics, I am sure that no one wishes for children to suffer under these circumstances. There is an organization in Berkley, CA called the Middle East Children?s Alliance which was founded to support the needs of children suffering from the various situations in the Middle East. Currently they are trying to raise the moneys necessary to ship medicines to the children in Gaza. You can send your tax-free donations to the following address:

MECA
901 Parker Street
Berkley, CA 94710
*Gaza meds memo*

or you can contact them online here:

http://www.mecaforpeace.org/GazaMeds.html

Please, if you are from North America, find it in your heart to make a donation no matter how small to this organization which is working so hard to bring help to the children there. Thank you

Adam and Sandmonkey:

Thank you both for sharing your opinion!

I feel it is time for me to step in and stop a possible personal attacks. The ingredients is already on the air. Please remember what we are discussing here and if you have a personal attack, it would be great if you take it offline, otherwise I regret I have to apply the comments policy (which you can read above the comment box).

Remember, I’m not defending or attacking any of you, for I think you both agree that we have better things to discuss and talk about than personal attacks.
