Cease Fire Now!

by Haitham Sabbah on 08/07/2006

You will not see this on CNN or BBC.

This video is dedicated to the children who have lost their lives because the US, UK and Israel have willingly stopped a ceasefire resulting in the massacre of the Lebaneses people.

Where is the worlds conscience?

Help these people by sharing this video with anyone you can. Cease Fire NOW!

Haitham, I disagree with you on this one.
Cease fire now? NO!
Israel, get out of Lebanon NOW!
Hizbollah has been proven to be the organization that is helping the people in Southern Lebanon get food and needed help.
I don’t agree with Hizbollah and their terrorist tactics, but they do the same good work as Hamas, Who I don’t agree with.
Boy, am I torn up here.
Terrorists I don’t agree with are the greatest supporters of people who live in Israeli terrorised territories.

Haitham,

They are indeed a very powerful and moving series of images, however I really do feel that you should give the BBC a break for once, and stop conflating it with CNN, (“you will not see this on CNN or BBC.”). I have seen many, many hours of REAL film footage documenting the Lebanese AND Palestinian tragedies on the BBC (not just a collection of still images), on BBC “rolling” news, main news broadcasts and documentaries. They were powerful and moving too. I have heard literally hundreds of middle eastern voices get a chance to discuss the issues from a Palestinian, Lebanese, Jordanian, whatever perspective on the BBC, and I have also seen many Israeli and American right wing spokespeople react with genuine shock and surprise as their lies and half truths have been ripped apart by BBC interviewers. Last night I also spent an hour watching “Shariah TV” on one of the main BBC channels, BBC2. I watch it regularly, as it is a wonderful programme which helps me to get an informed, scholarly, Muslim perspective on contemporary events.

It is true that I have written to the BBC on several occaisions to challenge some aspects of their news coverage, and yes, I have even cursed them sometimes! However, it is the largest broadcasting organisation in the world by a long way, and hence, it is a very “broad church” that encompasses many conflicting viewpoints. Because of this, and despite it’s faults, I would never compare it with CNN.

Here are some (fairly representative IMHO) examples of BBC reporting from Lebanon, and a couple of debates about whether the BBC is biased in it’s Middle East coverage.

Newsnight: BBC bias?

Newswatch: BBC Bias?

I would really like to know your thoughts on them if you have the time!

Haitham, you are obviously an intelligent and perceptive man, and of course you are totally right about bias in much of the “western” media, but I really do feel that you should take a look at the whole spectrum of BBC coverage before you dismiss it out of hand like this!-)

To Yuval and his brethern:
August 13th
1056 civilians killed in conflict: Lebanon

United Nations, Aug 13. (PTI): The Israeli bombings have claimed the lives of 1056 Lebanese civilians by Thursday and wounding another 3,600, while the conflict cost Beirut about two billion dollars, Lebanon has said.

This was disclosed by the office of Lebanese Higher Relief Council (HRC). It said as many as 7000 private homes, 900 commercial facilities, 630 roads, 72 overpasses and 23 fuel stations suffered varying degree of damage.

Also damaged were 29 airports, ports, water and swage facilities and electricity plants.

The breakup of the 2 billion dollars estimated by HRC included transportation infrastructure (386 million dollars), electricity plants and transmission facilities (180 million dollars), telecommunication infrastructure (85 million dollars) and water infrastructure (70 million dollars).

Statistics for Israel as of Aug 13th: Israel has lost 38 civilians and 82 soldiers.

That would be 88 DOZEN Lebanese civilians dead vs 3 dozen plus 2 dead Israeli civilians. Would you still like to play the counting and destruction game? :)
