Israeli army embarrassed by video broadcast (Mar 2002)

The Israeli army has expressed a note of contrition after a television station aired a videotape showing an army assault on a Palestinian home in which a mother of five children died.

When CBC News spoke with Ismail Hawarjeh at Bethlehem's hospital earlier this month, there was no way to verify the story he told about how his wife had died, until Israel's Channel 2 broacast the tape last weekend.

The Palestinian school administrator said his wife Huda had been killed in their home by an Israeli tank shell during the army's March 8 assault on the Aida refugee camp. The army wouldn't comment and foreign journalists weren't allowed inside the camp.

But Israeli media were allowed to ride along with the soldiers, and they went right into the Hawarjeh home. An Israeli camera recorded the army blowing off the door, and found Huda Hawarjeh bleeding on the floor.

The pictures conformed to Ismail Hawarjeh's story about his wife being hit by shrapnel in the front hallway of the house, and about the Israeli soldiers doing little to help her for an hour while she bled to death in front of her five children.

Finally, the soldiers allowed an ambulance to come to a nearby street, and soldiers helped Hawarjeh carry his wife to it. Doctors tried to revive her at the hospital but couldn't.

Huda Hawarjeh was one of seven people to die in the Bethlehem area that day.

The Israeli army allows the media such close access on the understanding it can embargo anything it doesn't want broadcast.

The tapes of the assault on the Hawarjeh home fell into that category. But Channel 2 broke the embargo anyway.

The army, government and many Israeli citizens didn't like what they saw.

Channel 2 showed Hawarjeh begging soldiers to allow an ambulance through. The camera captured the terror of the woman's daughter, and her brother's attempt to stop her from showing the soldiers her fear.

After the woman was finally taken out, one of the soldiers looked into the camera and said: "I don't know what we're doing here. Purification, maybe. It's dirty here. I don't know why a good Hebrew boy should be here, so far from his home."

The soldiers tore the home apart, evidently looking for weapons.

Another daughter begged them not to demolish the home's wall. Soldiers commonly smash walls to move into adjacent houses.

Israeli spokesman Ranaan Gissin said the government was disappointed by the decision to air the tapes. "I would have expected a little bit more self-censorship on the part of the Israeli media," he said.

Ma'ariv, Israel's second-biggest newspaper, ran the story on its front page on Monday, under a banner headline that read "Gaffe!"

The army, after trying to suppress distribution of the pictures, admitted the soldiers' actions pushed the boundaries of public acceptance.

"Our action is so difficult to be done that it is to the extremities of acceptance," said Olivier Rafowicz, an Israeli Defence Force spokesman.

He called what happened in the Hawarjeh home "a mistake."

That is truly horrible. Let's hope the terrorists stop shooting rockets into Israel and kidnapping soldiers so Israel will never again have an excuse to enter Gaza.

    Kevin,
Just out of curiosity I checked out your site. It is truly abhorant. You think it's funny to post a picture of beautiful live babies with an Israeli soldier pointing a gun at them saying that this is another Hizbollah doctored picture and that the Israelis are going to eat them? (implying that everything that is shown in this horrendous war against a civilian population is untrue) Well, I for one do NOT find that funny and ask you this, in the case of your statement about this video which involves Palestine, if your land was occupied for some 40 years AGAINST UN RESOLUTIONS, if you lived like the Palestinians do under direct threat on a DAILY basis, if you could not travel freely, work freely, marry freely, go the hospital freely, go to school without out fear of facing tanks on and on but as someone who is compassionate and educated you would know these things, just how would YOU deal with that situation. I suppose resistance and attacking your oppressor would never enter your mind because you know it's all just a joke!! Haram (oh, and by the way that's Arabic for SHAME!!)

    Kevin,

you've clearly got no idea about the current situation in the middle east. Go and read about the warsaw ghetto uprising and re-think your comments about, resistance and terrorism.

    poor guy. Haram.

Boy I do. The claims made by Hamas and Hezbollah are often so ridiculous that my photo is only slightly less ludicrous. In fact, I would not be stunned to learn that a significant portion of Palestinians actually believe that Jews eat babies.

I understand that you believe the land Israel conquered belongs to the Palestinians. I also understand that most Palestinians think that the land under Israel belongs to them as well. There are plenty of reasons to be angry at Israel, but attacking them will only bring you more dead fighters and innocent civilians.

Contrary to your statement, when they gave the Palestinians the Gaza strip, you could travel freely, work freely, marry freely, go the hospital freely, go to school without out fear of facing tanks on and on. A few Palestinians decided to take those freedoms away from you by attacking a soldier outpost. If they didn't do that, Gaza would still be free.

So blame Israel if you are in the mood to feel some righteous indignation, and insure that Palestinians keep dying. But if freedom for the people of the Gaza strip and most of the West Bank is your goal, don't let some Hamas jerk ruin it by attacking Israel when this is over.

I for one, prefer Palestinians to be alive, free, and not at war with Israel. But that's just me.

Since addressing fellow American citizens of your ilk (Yes I am American, not Arab or Palestinian) is usually a wasted effort, I will refer you to this article, from the Jerusalem Post (I'm sure you don't wish to try to undermine their credibility) dated July 8th of this year, many days after Israel's incursion into Gaza.

"Hamas Says It's Ready For a Ceasefire"
    excerts:

For the first time since the beginning of the current round of violence, the Hamas government on Saturday announced its readiness to accept a cease-fire with Israel and hold negotiations to resolve the case of kidnapped IDF soldier Cpl. Gilad Shalit.

Olmert won't agree to a truce until terrorists from Hamas free Gilad Shalit, who they captured nearly two weeks ago, officials in the prime minister's office said.

In response to Israel's rejection of the initiative, Ghazi Hamad, spokesman for the Hamas government, said Prime Minister Ehud Olmert was making a "mistake." Israel, he added, has tried the military solution, but to no avail.

"Israel can kill, destroy and use all its force against the Palestinians, but in the end it won't be able to achieve its goals," Hamad said. "I think Israel should accept the initiative so that we could reach an appropriate formula."

Sources close to Hamas described the announcement as a "serious attempt" on the part of Haniyeh to calm the situation and end the crisis that is threatening to bring down his government.

Meretz Chairman MK Yosssi Beilin called on Olmert to accept the cease fire proposal.

Haniyeh's proposal calls for a mutual cease-fire between Israel and the Palestinians and for the resumption of negotiations over the release of Shalit. It also calls for the release of all the Hamas representatives who were arrested by the IDF in the last two weeks and for reopening all border crossings into the Gaza Strip.

Please note Kevin, that this senseless terrorist action on the part of the Zionists will NEVER work on the Palestinians just as it would NEVER work on you if you were under an occupation for 40 years, the most HORRENDOUS occupation of modern history. I suggest strongly that you educate yourself and stop making jokes out of suffering. It is inmature and only shows just how undeducated to the subject matter you are. Maybe I can offer you a start to your education. http://www.bintjbeil.com/E/occupation/ameu_bible.html

Kevin, i suggest you not to post anymore till you realize what resistance means. Israelis are bad enough, but blaming opressed is sooooooooooooo bad, that man, you will regret your words one day.

Tell us Kevin, what would you do if US is not world's major power, and if it was illegaly occupied by Zionists who think that US is their promised land? Tell us, what you would do if occupiers enter your home, kick you out together with your family, then bring buldozzer to destroy your house (while you are watching) and leave you homeless. Besides all that, you don't have ANY tanks, ANY war aircrafts, or ANY bombs, except for your pain and anger. Sit for few minutes and imagine this situation, that's the least you can do for Palestinians.
