Hi Haitham,
His “mistake” was that he had the guts to call a spade a spade! He was very “mild” to say the least by calling it “apartheit” as in MY eyes and down at the core it is much more than that, it is racism! It is a very sad matter of fact, Arabs are NOT “only” racially segregated but heavily discriminated against in all aspects of life! I am always flabbergasted when someone, who do not have the shadow of a clue about reality, opens his/her mouth … how about finding out the FACTS before publically making a fool out of oneself??
Thanks so much Haitham … great piece of information! :-)
Haitham,
I have followed Pres. Carter’s recent book promotional appearances on NBC and NPR and he has a few major points.
1. He is not calling Israel an Apartheid state, he is calling Palestine an Apartheid state. The caller was so ignorant he didn’t even read the name of the book. No one can deny that Arab Israeli citizens, though discriminated, are not full citizens. They are full citizens with voting rights. Palestine is a whole diffrent kettle of fish. The Palestinians in Palestine are forced to live in squalor and not giving basic human dignity,by the Israeli govt., in an effort by a small minority of Israelis to take control of their land. These are simply facts and Carter simply states them. Carter also points out that even South Africa did not force blacks in that country to live in such conditions, making Palestine much worse.
2. Carter believes the solution is simple. Draw up the borders to pre-War level, create a unity government in Palestine, allow Palestinians to create a viable state free from interference, Palestinian and Israeli secession of violence, prisoner swap, allowing all Palestinians within Gaza and the West Bank a right to return subject to final review by the Israelis and a final solution on Jerusalem, possibly a splitting of the city or recognition of it as a religious capital not either states actual capital. I think probably the most contentious point, at least on this blog, is the right of return. The right of return will only be extended to those Palestinians within Gaza and the West Bank, at least at first, and allow them the final say on who gets in. The reason is simply that this is to get the Israelis on board and to pander to security concerns. It also seems somewhat logical because there will always be a small portion of extremist on both sides who will not be happy till the other side is wiped out.
3. Israel does not need to negotiate with Hamas. Israel does not recognize Hamas and Hamas does not recognize Israel. Israel does recognize the PLO as the only legitimate government in Palestine and their spokes man, Pres. Abbas. Israel may continue negotiations with Pres. Abbas while simply ignoring Hamas, as Hamas ignores them right back. Hamas may be brought in at later stages for final approval of any deals but still remaining true to its principles by not talking to Israel. This is a really good point. It shows how Israel must take the first move and talk with the only legitimate government they recognize, the PLO through Pres. Abbas.
I think it is a pretty good plan. Both groups gain, Palestinians gain freedom and most of them a right to return and Israel security and a guarnatee that their country will not be flooded with Palestinians from over the world seeking a right of return, and Both groups must make concessions, Palestinians are subject to review by Israel for a right to return and Israel must withdraw to pre-War borders. God, if only someone would actually listen and start this up. (I know Egypt and Jordan are doing a lot behind the scenes but the EU, Russia, the UN and the US must help out also!! It is our responsibility.) Love, Sean
Hi Haitham,
I actually followed three interviews with Carter regarding his book. These were on CNN, MSNBC and on PBS but I missed the one on CSPAN. I was surprised to see him speaking the way he did. He stressed on the fact one israeli soldier get kidnapped by the palestinians and all hell break lose. And nobody in all the media mention anything about the 9,000 kidnapped palestinians which include women and children. Also, he stressed that the wall was built on palestinian lands. And talked about the miserable living conditions imposed by the israel on the palestinians. I agree that in these interviews he just mentioned facts, but we have to remember that these are the same facts that no media want to cover.
one interesting thing was when he was asked about what he thought about president Sadat he replied that “he was a great man, a very generous man, he was so generous that he was willing to give concessions that I and the Israelis did not asked for!”
President Carter is a great man.
He is now telling the American People that their support of Israel is supporting genocide.
What American has ever done that before?
I am proud of him! Give him credit wgere it is due!
I’m very proud of President Carter. He’s the only American statesman, politician with the integrity to tell the truth about what’s happening in Palestine. I’m an American too and can testify how little real information the public receives regarding this illegal, immoral occupation. However, everyday more people are becoming aware of how much suffering the Palestinian people are enduring. I’m ashamed of our government’s policy of supplying Israel with unlimited arms and support. The Arab world should understand though that there’s millions of Americans like me who demand justice and freedom for the Palestinian people. I’m writing letters to inform people, in my local community what’s going on, and will do all I can to help conter the Israeli lobby in America. Sincerely, John S. Hancock
Well you can read a review of his book here:

A great work, I must say. A recommended must-buy.

Let’s see if I have this right – Israel is an “apartheid state”?
It remains the official policy of the Palestinian Authority that no Jews are allowed to live there (in Palestinan territories). None. Zero. Zip. Zilch. This has always been the demand of the Palestinians, whether it was Yasser Arafat in charge or Mahmoud Abbas or Hamas. It matters not. The unconditional demand is that no Jews are allowed.
Israel, meanwhile, as even Carter points out, provides full citizenship rights for millions of Arabs. But the Arabs will not tolerate even one Jew within their territory or their future country of Palestine. Those are the rules.
Which is the Arartheid state?
PS – I’m sure this comment won’t survive long on this board – After all Sabbah says it himself – he reserves the right etc….LOL – If the only way to get your point out there is to post only those you agree with – I wish you well with your own little personal apartheid state.
Cal,
Do you really live in this planet? When and where did the Palestinians say that Jews are not allowed to live in Palestine? Palestine was always a holy land for all the three religions and Palestinians (Jew, Christians and Muslims) lived side by side until the Zionist came and occupied their land.
If you mean the Jewish settlers, of course they are not welcome to live on my land, simply because it is not their land. When one steal my land (regadless if he is Jew, Christian or Muslim), I have the right to resist him by all means. Jewish settlers are nothing more than racist Zionists.
In his Statement Before the United Nations on November 13, 1974, Yasser Arafat said:
Contrary to all Zionist leaders who always said that Israel is the “Jewish State”.
Further, you are telling me that Arab-Israel (who have no choice but to hold the Israeli nationality) can travel freely? Can protest freely? Can talk freely? etc… Ignorance is not an excuse, Cal!
Oh, and just one sample opinion by Desmond Tutu: Apartheid in the Holy Land (old, but still useful).
Hello all,
Ever notice that your beautiful country looks like a fetus? It is held by far as the most beautiful part of all the Holy Land! I will be praying for the Palestinians to recieve food, clothing, water, shelter and the comfort of God. This land I love, and I grieve that those who suffer behind the wall have been cut off. It is not the land that makes it holy, but God. His mercy and his grace, comfort and love will not become a byword at the hands of Zionists. I believe that the land belongs to God, and all should be free to live there, reflecting the love and mercy of God. My people have sinned against the Palestinian’s, the Arab-Israeli’s, Muslims and Christians, through blood shed, lies and false witness. For this I grieve. Although all Israeli’s should not be put into this category, if they are silent about it, then they too are guilty. May forgiveness and healing be found once again. I consider Palestine a part of my people by blood through Abraham. Yours are the forgotten Semites. If you are from Abraham, as I am from Abraham, then also from Shem. This is where the true meaning of Semite comes from…Shemite. That means we are family, and violence done against Palestinians is also Anti-semite. Maybe you wouldn’t agree, but we are family, and I will rejoice when all our people dwell once again in safety, with out walls. No more should walls divide, to drown out the sorrows of mothers and children from Israeli Tourists. Palestine shall not be aborted, and I pray that she be kept safe in the womb of the Zionist state. I do not want to call it Israel, because to do that would to bring shame upon my father Jacob’s name, and upon his father Issac’s name and upon Abraham, our common father’s name. No, Zionism should end, so that Palestinian children and Israeli children may learn to love one another with out restraint. It is the way of a holy people, who call upon a Holy God.
I hope my post doesn’t offend anyone. If it did, forgive me. If a jew is offended by my remarks…deal with it brother or sister, and repent!
