University of Bradford student trapped in Gaza
Urgent Appeal: Support Khaled al-Mudallal’s Right to Education
Khaled al-Mudallal is a Palestinian and a Business and Management student at the University of Bradford. He is currently trapped in Gaza due to the restrictions on freedom of movement imposed by Israel. Khaled needs to return to Bradford urgently to begin the third year of his degree course.
Khaled returned to his home town of Rafah in June with the intention of staying only for a few days. He has a British residence permit valid until November 2010.
According to Israeli human rights organisation Gisha, Khaled is one of several hundred Palestinian students who are being prevented from leaving Gaza to return to courses abroad. Gisha believes the Israeli government is in breach of international law. The right to education is enshrined in the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
The NUS Black Students’ Campaign, University of Bradford Students’ Union, General Union of Palestinian Students, University and College Union, Federation of Student Islamic Societies and the Palestine Solidarity Campaign are calling on all students in Britain to support Khaled’s right to continue his education and the right of all Palestinian students to access education free from the restrictions imposed by Israel’s illegal occupation.
Urgent Action:
* Print and collect signatures for the petition and encourage others to do the same - the petitions will be sent to the British and the Israeli Prime Ministers.
* Write to the Israeli Prime Minister calling for the travel restrictions imposed on Gaza to be lifted and for Khaled to be allowed to leave to return to Bradford.
* Write to the British Prime Minister Gordon Brown calling on him to bring pressure to bear on his Israeli counterpart to lift the restrictions on students from Gaza, including Khaled, leaving Gaza to access education.
* Contact student media to try to get articles published raising awareness of Khaled’s situation and the plight of Palestinian students living under Israel’s illegal occupation.

Update: Israeli Court refuses to help Gazan resume studies in Britain
The High Court of Justice on Tuesday refused to intervene in the case of a Gaza graduate student who remains trapped in the coastal strip, unable to resume studies in Britain, an advocacy group reported…
Gisha, an Israeli human rights group, petitioned the high court on his behalf, but the court declined to intervene, reasoning that al-Mudallal could apply to leave Gaza on one of the sporadic shuttle buses Israel lets out of the strip, said Sari Bashi, the group’s director. [Source: Ha'aretz]

Hey Haitham, how are you!… Just wanted to say that this problem is facing almost 1000+ student who were seeking to leave Gaza to resume there studies after Hamas took over Gaza, note that this number doesn’t include students who wanted to travel outside Gaza to enroll in foreign/arab schools for the first time. I was trapped in Gaza since May 25th. I only left on the first week of September and then was able to catch my studies in the U.S. at the very very last moment. Actually I was thinking about pursuing online activities and campaigns to be able to steer people’s attention to the case of Palestinian students trapped in Gaza, but then realized that if I would have a chance to leave Gaza, this kind of activity may result in being denied exit permit, and this has happened to many people who contacted some international organizations working inside “Israel”. I had obtained exit permit by the help of the U.S. Department of State because of my affiliation with the Fulbright Fellowship program. Someone cannot imagine how it feels when he’s trapped in the Gaza Strip! I had gone through this and I can tell anyone, this is the biggest prison on earth, it’s a place where you see your future is vanishing in front of your eyes… I am not sure if Khaled is still in Gaza or not, but I would advice him to push on the UK embassy in Tel-Aviv, this might help. The Israelis doesn’t care about online petitions or campaigns…
How would you feel if you were in the Palestinans in Gaza now ? Imagine your baby was sick and you wanted to treat it but you can’t because there are no medications around you since you have been banned to get them. Have some sympathy for God’s sake! Israel is not the only country that needs to defend itself, but so does Palestine. What the HELL happened to the idea of peace? why is it always WAR that goes on the news and in the media? When will the day come when Palestinians and Israelis shake hands and end this conflict that has been lasting for 60 years so far?!
Many students are NOT allowed to resume their studies and are stuck in Gaza . I read about a family (one of many) who came on holidays from the Emirates, where the son is an Architect there , the whole family packed and went through gate of rafah but apparently they wont allow them to travel because they entered eygpt Illegally . i just dont understand what s going on but it is a total mess , poor palestinians when they are left and abandonned by ALL , including the coward guttless Arabs .
darehuman
the Israelis can do a LOT , they are on the strong side , they have a free soveirgn country which is a 4th world military power and nuclear power too , it has a thriving economy . so It is Israel that can do a LOT , starting by Freeing the Palestinians and recognizing their rights as human beings . After all Most Israelis have a relative who suffered in the holocaust , so we expect them to have some kind of compassion for a fellow human being . right ? and not act as their Nazi oppressor
