One of the biggest criticisms of Dubai has always been the traffic congestion, ask me about it as I lived there for six years.
In an effort to reduce the traffic, Dubai, opened a floating bridge which connect the two sides of the creek - Deira and Bur Dubai.
The Floating Bridge project is part of an integrated system, implemented that will reduce the traffic congestion. The number of lanes that cross Dubai Creek will increase from 19 to 38 lanes by 2007 and to 45 lanes by 2008.
The Floating Bridge, a first-of-its-kind project in the UAE, will be built out of 20-metre-wide hollow concrete blocks that will float on water. The rolling segment of the bridge allows the bridge to open and close at intervals of 20 minutes. These opening and closing times will be set in coordination with the authorities regulating the movement of ships and ferries crossing Dubai Creek.

I was hoping to see something related to public transportation such as an extensive rail/underground network, rather than just adding more lanes. UAE citizens consumer the largest amount of energy per capita in the world! Much more than citizens of western Europe and NA..
Having said that, this is a pretty interesting engineering feat.
Omar: As far as i know, they are building a metro system for Dubai (http://www.dubaimetro.info/ ) So, there are some actions for public transportation … i can’t vouch for its usefulness though.
Wow! Dubai is the city of dreams come true!
