Thirteen Austrian bishops were barred from praying at Jerusalem’s Western Wall last week by Jewish religious authorities when they refused to take off their crosses, according to Austrian officials.
On a planned visit on Thursday to the wall - the holiest place where Jews can pray - the bishops were given an ultimatum by the rabbi of the site: Either remove the crosses or stand behind a fence several meters (yards) from the site. The bishops refused the request and watched people praying from behind the fence, according to an Austrian official…Read on

What conclusions can we draw from this information? Every culture has crazy old farts who just make up stuff as they go. And they always try to attribute the rules to something written down by even older and crazier old farts. That doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with the faith. It just means human beings are fallible.
There’s the letter of the law and there’s the spirit of the law and there are people who couldn’t interpret a drivers manual. We don’t let them drive when they get that old.
Rabbi, when is a rabbi old enough retire?
Let me guess, those guys were charedi religious authorities–the ultra-conservative. I doubt most Israelis would make such a fuss over something like this. As dean says above, every culture has its own crazy fundamentalists….
So immediately after I write the apologetic for crazy old farts I find this Haaretz story in the RSS feed at Peoples Geography. The facts seems to suggest that the fundamentalist rabbis seem to doing more than just denying Christians their crosses. They seem to be corrupting the youth - mirroring the racist ideology we so often hear Jews projecting upon Arab fundamentalists. Oy! Some people’s children.
Christians in Jerusalem want Jews to stop spitting on them
So we all want to remove a sliver from someone else’s eye, while we have a plank in our own.
Forgot to include valuable link spam to Peoples Geography resources. Ann El Khoury includes literally hundreds of significant articles at her Del.icio.us page. Her blog also has the RSS results from Del.icio.us so you can catch the headlines there too. There are just too many information channel widgets to keep track of these days. Innit great?
I like to cruise Ann’s finds while I have my first cup of coffee in the morning. Sometimes it seems like she’s been up all night finding the freshest fresh, but actually she’s been tossing them in there all day long while the sun is shining brightly over Australia.

Until ALL the religions come together and know that to LOVE and cooperative is what is important.;we don’t stand a chance. My country no longer revers life,be it plant, animal or human.A cross must make some Jews feel guilty. When I heard about the Arab lady jailed and to get 200 lashes BECAUSE she was ganged raped,I felt angry as hell.God by any name gave us life to enjoy,to celebrate,to make more beautiful. We have done a lousy job especially in loving and caring for each other and for this beautiful earth.Read Arabwomanblues.blogspot.com and you will hear a heart that cries out in sorrow and anger.I feel the same but do not have her beautiful way with words. That my country has destroyed the people, the treasures that can never be replaced fills my heart with such sorrow that it is almost unbearable. What ever your religion pray for peace for all lands and let our children know some bright, care free days.I love you all, omjaya
Bless you, Jean Jones!
