As far a a tower of Babel is concerned, God smote that because of human pride. they were trying to deliberately reach Heaven; God. We aren't proposing sky cities for that reason. Done with foresight and a meticulously studied understanding of human social dynamics and a hightened sense of environmental consciousness vertical cities could provide unprecidented contributions towards reducing a variety of pollutants. Lets face it, people won't have to get into a car to go to work, or to shop, or to visit friends, and family. Let's not also forget that it will help reduce human encroachement upon wilderness habitats by putting us humans in the sky instead of cutting down another acre of trees just so a handful of people can have a condo to live in.
