A Muslim cleric in Saudi Arabia has called on women to wear a full veil, or niqab, that reveals only one eye.
Sheikh Muhammad al-Habadan said showing both eyes encouraged women to use eye make-up to look seductive.
The question of how much of her face a woman should cover is a controversial topic in many Muslim societies.
The niqab is more common in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf, but women in much of the Muslim Middle East wear a headscarf which covers only their hair.
Sheikh Habadan, an ultra-conservative cleric who is said to have wide influence among religious Saudis, was answering questions on the Muslim satellite channel al-Majd. [Source: BBC]

Why don’t they enforce full-face cover and kill the issue? What do you call this? Religion and Islam? No Way!
Oh… by the way… anyone knows which eye should be covered? Left of right? (I assumed left because they keep on telling us to do things with our RIGHT thing… Ah… now I’m getting the rule. “Do the Right things with the RIGHT things only.” This is where the Human “Rights” came from and here we see it in action.

Are the supreme leaders on drugs? There are two views to every thing. This is an extreme view. Why should women suffer because of men’s weakness. Why should women suffer because of men’s stupidity? Why can’t women be women and men be men? Why do women have to hide because of male stupidity? Are men really that stupid that they might try something if women were revealing? Why persecute women for men’s stupidity? If men are stupid, make laws to persecute them and not the women!
If I am wrong, please let me know.
I love looking at beautiful women. I constantly compare them to my wife. When they are more beautiful than my wife, I think back 35 years and find them lacking in beauty. They will never compare to my wife.
Do your leaders really need to hide a woman’s beauty to protect men? Or are your religious leaders afraid of a woman’s beauty?
Women are beautiful and should be enjoyed to watch. God gave them their beauty.
If men take an advantage, they should be persecuted.
A personal view: God gave women beauty and brains because he wanted them to be in control because men had only impulses that they acted upon. I think that women are more important than men because they can have children and men can’t. Men are trying everything they can to control women and their reproductive systems.
And I blame religions and their twisted readings of their scriptures.
Women are more important than men. Women can reproduce, men can’t.
Think about it!
God didn’t give men control, he gave women control. Men took it away using their religion. They ignored their God in the process.
Both Islam and Christianity have veered away from the truth of womans’ importance. They are the most important people in our world and they should be protected and not controlled!
We need them to continue our existence. Domination is not the way. Religion is not the way.
Mutual existence is the way. Religion should accept women as to how important they are and accept it. Men should accept women as to how important they are and not subjugate them.
Equality is the way with accepting women’s importance.
Most religions have veered away from this important view to put men in control.
We have to accept this view if we want to survive as a species.

But looking again, I can so put some flare into that look by the way!! Imagine a hot pink pirates patch covering that one sexy eye……

@cecile - Just imagine if that was stated. Existing “one-eyed” ladies will lose sight by “law”
May be someone should get the cleric to wrap up and cover both his eyes that way he will no longer be troubled by the sight of seductive eye make up.
I am amazed that the Saudi women are allowed to show their eyes. In India and Pakistan I saw many women who wore the Burqua which essentially covers everything, including the eyes. The women have to look through some holes in a crochet looking screen before their eyes, where they can look out, but nobody can look in.

maybe all the arab men should wear patches on one eye,pick an eye, any old eye will do, then the women will find them sexy and chase after them. then equality will be reached and all arabs will be happy

@Haitham Sabbah - Yes it’s the clerics, but there’s so many of them, and their outrageous voice is what’s being carried - so right now it seems they’re speaking for this religion.
Where is the voice of reason of Islam? In a time when incredible megaphones are at everyone’s disposal, the inspirational, rational, progressive voice is not heard nor seen.
Why? How is it possible that in this day and age ignorance is able to hijack the show?! Enlightenment has access to the same tools and audiences.
I’m not religious, so I know it’s easy for me to be critical and ask simplistic questions, but I truly don’t get it.

@haitham: i could suggest a new chain of centers for islamic aesthetics, where i would propose the following fashion to become a big hype: islamic clerics should grow their eyebrows, like beards! tadaa!
Haitham , did you know what a Long long time ago , women in Algeria wore the white veil and showed One Eye , some showed Both . but now that white veil has gone , it has been replaced by the Moroccan Djellaba and the face is shown . some wear western Clothes and do not cover up , some western clothes and Hijab , some Djellaba and a matching scarf .
Unfortunately saudi is getting more and more narrower in its traditions and views .

I already do. But thank you for the opportunity. You say that we shouldnt blame religion but only a few clerics on this specific issue. But religion is not an abstract concept.It is interpreted by men and has an impact on the lives of other men (and women obviously). So my question to you. And I apologise for only stumbling on your blog today and not knowing your background in detail: Why is two eyed Niqab less absurd than the one eyed niqab? This concept is nothing new as Fatima mentioned; the hayek is the traditional form of all covering that was once common in Algeria - a white sheet type garment covering the entire body except one eye. I think the ladies would hold it closed with their hands or teeth. Also, I believe it is the view of Ibn Kathir or Ibn Sirin (forgot which, maybe both) that a woman may only uncover one eye to see the way. I agree that it is rather extreme but just want to point out that this opinion is not a new one.
Aaaa religion…..certainly is the opium of the people. The so called religious people say “My Islam is better than your Judaism, than your Christianity, your Hinduism”.
When will people realize we are all equal, regardless of your origin, sexual orientation, beliefs, etc?. Even though Christianity and Judaism are not saints, at least in those countries women are treated better. My heart breaks for all those poor women in Muslim countries. I cannot help but feel sorry, and yes, sometimes angry, at those societies, specially Saudi Arabia, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Jordan, etc. Men are free to do whatever they wish, but how about women? However, when they go west, they party and have a great time. All hypocrites.

Niqap is culture not in all trips of saudi , bedwins trips are more famous to use it ….and is not relegion…
There is nothing in Quran nor in Hadeeth any script ask women to cover… period , they should stop nagging on this issu e
