This time Spanish newspaper. Lali Sandiumenge writes at "Avui" means "Today" in Catalan, the language that they speak in North-East of Spain (Catalonia). Lali told me that this newspaper is the main newspaper written in Catalan in Barcelona.

Here is the full interview transcript, part of which was published in last Sunday edition beside other parts of similar interviews with other Arab Bloggers.

Q1. When and why did you start writing a blog?

A1. I started blogging late 90's. However, that time blogs where not known as they are today. I used to focus on technology and IT security issues. Early 2002 I became more and more focused on Middle East issue. The reason was my disappointment of what I used to read about what and how the Middle East is presented to the world online. It was (and maybe still) an image drawn with black painting on a black background. I felt that I have a duty to do. At least try to erase one line from that dark painting and replace it with a white one that represent some of the unknown shiny facts about this part of the world. That's when I decided to focus my own blog (http://sabbah.biz) on Mideast. Slowly the blog topics encouraged healthy discussions, which encouraged me to write more on political, cultural, religious and life of Arabs.

Q2. Can you define your blog?

A2. I'm interested in everything, but my chief interest is in the intersection between politics and individual liberty in the Middle East and Muslims world. My blog tries to dispel the rough and ugly image that we suffer from the rest of the world, specially from the west. The vast majority of my blog posts touches on this in one way or another, and try to create a better understanding that we are not as bad as the western media painted us for decades.

Q3. What role does the blog play in your life now? (where do you write, how time a day, is a kind of addiction? it has changed you in some way..???)

A3. Well, I run and participate in several Internet website projects that are geared to spread freedom of speech and enable everyone who wants to speak to have the means to speak -- and everyone who wants to hear that speech, the means to listen to it. Writing from home and sometimes while in office, at least I spend 10 hours on daily bases. It has changed the way I live and has become an addiction. My family understand that, and even support me to do more.

Q4. How many visitors do you have? What kind of people?

A4. Last few months average is half a million hit that comes from over 40000 unique visitors. Sorted by percentage of numbers of visitors, they come from USA, Australia, Europe, China then Arab countries such as Saudi, Jordan, Bahrain, etc...

Mostly open minded, moderate and people searching for alternative views and news.

Q5. I know that you are working to organize a Middle East Bloggers Meetup. Could you explain me something about that?

A5. The idea started last year. I organized the first blogger Meetup early 2004 in Bahrain. We even had one blogger coming from Qatar to join us. The Meetup was very successful and most of the bloggers who attended shared their experience online. Later the news of our meetup encouraged more bloggers from few Arab countries to start such a meetups and they liked the idea. Now I know that on regular bases, meetups are held on Kuwait, Jordan, Lebanon, Egypt, Tunisia and of course Bahrain. Needless to say that these countries have the most active bloggers in the Arab world, and more is coming.

In the coming future, I'm coordinating with few Middle East bloggers to hold an annual regional bloggers conference. This should give us a forum to discuss tools and strategies to develop blogging in the Arab world.

Q6. How widely read do you think are the blogs in the region? Which are the main problems? (languages, Internet access, restrictions, freedom...?????)

A6. All of what you said. Due to some cultural restrictions in the Middle East, majority of the surfers are usually go searching for material that is censored or restricted or banned to distribute in the Middle East. Starting with books, political articles, art, MSM, tools and ending up with adult material, most (if not all) of which are not available through other resources.

On the other hand, due to low level of education in some countries, and high cost of Internet access in others, language and censorship, Internet is still not so publicly used resource. In fact it is very much under utilized in so many parts of the Middle East.

When it comes to blogging, we are witnessing now a huge increase in the numbers of blogs, both in Arabic as well English. Earlier, it was difficult for Arabic blogs to take off due to limitation of tools online. Now that many open source projects, volunteers and tutorials exist to assist and help spreading the use of blogs, both in English and Arabic, the number and quality of blogs are improving.

Q7. You are one of a few bloggers that is not afraid to show his identity and photo. Why?

A7. Why should I? Identity plays a major role in establishing credibility to what a blogger says. Beside that, I believe and practice my right in freedom of expression.

I'm not an enemy to my society, nor I'm a missionary. Having said that, we have to lead by example. Not only in the Arab world, but in front of the whole world as well. If I criticize any, that's because I like to find a solution to it, or to dispel the myth that surrounds all the taboos around us. Now, that is not a crime, so why should I hide behind a anon ID?

Beside that, moderate Arabs and Muslims are in fact majority of the Middle East public now. Unlike what is said about Arabs and Muslims in the MSM and the tags and labels that were stick to us. Therefore, speaking without hiding faces is in fact a reflection of what we live these days. It is very important for me to be transparent, so that visitors to my blog are encouraged to practice the same. This makes it easy to break ice and establish bridges of communication.

Having said all that, I don't believe one should hide his ID when blogging. The world is becoming even smaller than a global village, and one should not fear that he will be accused for something he said or thinks as far as what he says is objective and does not break rules. One has to remember that a big mass of supports and NGO's will jump in if a blogger is detained or accused unfairly by any local authorities. Unlike the old days, authorities can not hide this. I believe one of the best ways to fairly protest and express his freedom of expression can be online, and with original ID. This way he will establish support, beside get interaction and maybe form or reform his ideas for best, yet not fall in the trap of negative criticism.

On the other hand, if blogging anonymously is extremely important due to personal security reasons, then that's welcome. But one has to keep in mind that blogging anonymously opens the doors for intruders to spread lies and rumors claiming an ID of a local or a country that he might never even visited or knew. Organized propaganda is a serious tool that is cleverly used by extremists of all parts of the world as well to spread poisoned theories among bloggers thus society. So, one has to be careful to what he reads and whom he believes and support.

Q8. I need also some help, if it is possible. 1) Can you send me a photo (of you)? 2) Do you have some kind of statistics about bloggers, Internet access, etc, in the Middle East?

A8. You can a photo here: http://sabbah.biz/mt/about/

as for statistics, I don't have much, sorry, but I can tell you of some aggregators which list many (but not all) of the best Middle east blogs. here are they:

So, I'm again in the news. This time it was Italian media. Following is the transcript of my interview with Paola Caridi - a journalist who lives and works in the Middle East as a correspondent of Lettera22, an Italian news agency which collaborates with the leading national weeklies and dailies.

So here you go:

Q1. Its a reality that Arab dissent is growing through blogs, the easiest and cheapest way to collect thoughts and people, and to avoid for a while regimes censorship. Tunisia seemed to me a sort of country of birth, but the river of information/communication through blogs was really spreading specially starting this year, between February and March, when Arab bloggers were observing with a lot of attention all the political activities allover the region. Not only the so called Cedar revolution in Lebanon, but were spreading information (pictures, also) about dissent in Cairo (Kefaya et alia), with a growing attention to referendum and police violence, electoral campaign in August and presidential elections; talking about Syria, Kuwait, Bahrain dissent; disseminating the net with artistic samizdat. Can you explain this phenomenon from your point of view?

A1. The phenomenon is a natural inclination of maturity that wanted to make a clear position of the humble citizens of Middle Eastern, by taking the responsibility to represent the truth as they live it and see it, not as the west received it from what the majority of the Arabian bloggers, a biased anti-Arab, anti-Islam media.

Of course, presenting the truth as they live it and see it is not necessary counted as pro local governments and regimes, and not necessary against them, but in most cases resulted that blogger try to achieve the following:

Have a new window to represent the Arab countries, from within its people.

Anonymous (as most of them think they are) blogger, where no one can question him or hold him accountable for what he claim against, or for the country he represent. In other words, this created an attraction for the blogger to be free to reveal as much of their identity as they choose, unlike the public media

Correcting, and in some cases introducing the point of view that you never see on western media

Open new channels of discussion with formal and non formal identities inside ones country as well as outside

Get attention and support from international media as well as NGO's for cases that one day were impossible to cross the borders of the room or the country they toke place

Mobs organization and unofficial groups space for declarations that are not permitted by the local governments and societies they live in. An example of that could be gays, or religious extremist, both of which are rejected widely within the Arab society

The unlimited topics and means of presentation that defeats the old Arab media style, which unfortunately is not showing any tendency of developing towards representing the pulse of the citizens rather than the rules by which they have to live within as dictated by their governments

The commercial and out-of-culture entertainment media, which in all cases was and still is a copy of imported foreign values that do not represent the Arab culture in general, and the refusal to accept that as the face value of the moderate citizens, hence the Arab bloggers

The emergence of few organizations who have sprung up to protect and to fight for the human rights in these countries, encouraged to have an extension of activities through bloggers who in all too many countries, face clampdowns on their freedom of expression

Another attraction of blogs in Arab world is the feedback, with readers of blog entries able to post their comments directly to blogs, thus hearing the hidden local news as well the opposite point of view that will never have space or means to appear to the public

War blogs and bloggers as a tool. This is conceived by some Arab bloggers, specially the depressed ones who feel that they have no chance to fight the war against their enemy (whoever and whatever that enemy is) face to face, due to the external and internal boundaries that govern his society

At the same time the online technology for setting up blogs has become increasingly user friendly, and is free

Q2. Arab blogs are not only political. Which kind of social and cultural reality do they represent, or at least show to us? Are they a sort of would-be butterfly constraint inside her prison but quite ready to fly, or its a short-term net-phenomenon?

A2. Arab blogs are like all other blogs. Yes the age of Arab blogs is small when compared to the USA blogs for example, but we have to keep in mind the fact that the majority of The Arab blogger community is overwhelmingly youthful, with many of them being students or aged 20-40. Youth is one of the striking characteristics of bloggers in the Arab world. Whereas in the USA for example many bloggers are long-established journalists, commentators and political troublemakers, such personalities in the Arab world do not yet generally have blogs.

Maybe this is partly because younger people have fewer inhibitions about mixing their writing about politics with contributions on more personal matters. It seems as if there are more English than Arabic-language blogs, and in the Maghreb there are of course many French blogs.

Therefore, what they represent is what modern reality of their social and cultural life is. I don't agree to describe them as being in prison and ready to fly, no, they are what they are. However, unfortunately this is not what the West perceives about the Middle East. Being it a matter of heritage or a result of biased media, westerns still think that Arabs means camels, tents and 1001 nights.

Q3. I saw a debate in the Arab blogosphere on the language. Whats the inner meaning of this debate. Is Arabic used also as a sort of ideological mean? English and French are only seen as a colonialistic heritage or represent something else? What do you think, finally, about the typical mix normally used by younger and educated Arab generations?

A3. I don't believe that is true. Yes, most if not all the early Arab bloggers had no choice when they started but to use the English as their blog language. But as I said, there was no choice. Arabic blog engines and tools were not available then. But I also don't blame them, the Arabic bloggers in considering this as a colonialistic heritage, specially that famous blog tools such as blogger.com does not by default support writing in Arabic, even they don't list Palestine Territories in the list of countries as when one register for a new blog!

On the other hand, I believe English blogs of Arabic bloggers has different objective than those written in Arabic, and that is the reach to the west in most, and the first language of some for those who live outside the Arab world.
For decades, there were no open channels between the East and the West. Blogs was and still is a great opportunity for Arab with bilingual skills to reach other around the world. To start a process of "learning to unlearn" on the non-Arab mass, so that the old believes and values perceived about Arabs, their culture and society are corrected and/or updated, and to represent an alternative point of view than that presented by local and foreign official views. It is very essential mind opener tool.

At the same time, Arabic blogs are also essential tool for open discussion between Arabs. A tool that never existed before to share ideas, to form a position, and to organize a move. Arabs in general never got the chance to live a democratic life locally or regionally. Hence, I believe that Arabic blogs will also help transfer of knowledge and strategies directly and indirectly will help in the long run to empower the Mobs. The recent Egyptian elections, and the reaction of Arab blogger (Arabic and English) from Egypt and outside, is a good example although it might have not made a big difference on the Elections process, but I think will be more powerful next elections, not only in Egypt, but in all Arab countries.

Q4. If we speak about the age of civil and political bloggers, many of you are very young. Do you agree that the bloggers are the sons of Al Jazeera revolution? At least from 2000 Al Aqsa intifada, they are digesting information not through anachronistic national State television channels. Do you think that Al Jazeera and her tv sisters were the necessary food for these blogs to grow and spread? Do you think that this is their way to show that they are ready to use not-conformistic information through the communication channels they have? In a word, through Blogs? Is there anything Al Jazeera and her tv sisters taught to bloggers in the way they do also information?

A4. In fact I think the contrary is true. Al Jazeera has learned from Arab Bloggers and followsuited by opening their English website, which is a great success by the way to the Arabic media. In fact I guess this success encouraged them to take the decision to open the English TV channel of Al Jazeera, which should be live early next year as they claim.

On the other hand, and as was mentioned before, most of the bloggers are very young. And to tell you the truth, Al Jazeera is not so much famous TV channel between this generations. However, that maybe does not apply to the political bloggers, which are not by the way that young. But, did Al Jazeera revolution have an effect on Arab bloggers? Yes it had, and probably will continue to do, specially that most if not all Arabs see it as the first open-debate channel that touch on taboos, similar to what Arab bloggers do touch on.

Having said all that, sometimes one has the impression the young Arab bloggers cannot believe the attitude of the older generation and especially figures of authority locally and internationally. And these are often challenged on Al Jazeera, but do not represent the Arab bloggers views, which mean that it does not represent the mass educated and ignored young generation. In fact, I believe that young generation has no presentation in the Arab media "revolution", except few, very few Arabic newspapers articles here and there, on the other hand, much more attention from the western media, and this interview is an example :-)
Period.

They were only four question, I answered in four pages :-)

Anyway, please feel free to answer above questions and add correct me if I'm wrong...

I forgot to mentioned that I was interviewed by BBC Arabic World Service a couple of days ago.

As I understood, the interview was for a new program called BBC Xtra and it was about Arab Bloggers and Blogging in the Arab world. Basically we talked about my own experience, why I blog, how and why I chose certain subjects, the characteristics of a blogger, etc...

If the sound quality of the recording is good, it will be broadcast early June and I will keep you updated on the timing.

The good conclusion of this interview is that I realized that some other Arab Bloggers were interviewed too. That means that Arab Bloggers are getting more attention now, specially that the written media already gave us some attention.

I believe and hope that this attention will increase, and this would only be possible by more quality Arab Bloggers in all subjects.

All the best Bros & Sis.

Update I: I just came to know that Mahmood was interviewed too, but on a different subject.

Update II: Apparently MMM and Eman were interviewed for the same program. Cooool... :-)

Unfortunately there seems to be some routing problems these days that affect reaching arablogger.com. Below results was obtained from alertra.com, which shows that arablogger.com was reachable from London, Frankfurt, Chicago and Orlando, but not from Las Vegas, Hong Kong, Atlanta and Oklahoma (at the time of the check, 9:00 GMT). These are just sample routes, which means that if your route is unlucky and fall through one of the faulty routes, then you will face some temp. problems. On the other hand, this also means that the server hosting arablogger.com is running normally, and is reachable by others.

Unfortunately, in cases of above failures, nothing can be done from our side. Try some other time!

Note: These problems can be of many reasons and shapes. Even Google was downed by latest MyDoom. However, Internet performance management company Keynote Systems said "there could be some wider Internet problem, but we're still researching the data."

However the Zope platform seems to be very advance and sophisticated and promising. I was amazed by the number of products (more than 200, many other webloges) they support, I wish I had my own test-bed server to run this Python monster. May be soon!

Drupal is another well coded platform. Although it is was a nightmare to get it up and running, however it is very advance and got a lot of support and features I was looking for. It's on my "alpha" site now, once I finish the setup I'll invite users for beta testing. If you wish to join the team, just give me a call.

b2evolution also looks good. I'll install it today and see give it a try.

It is petty to admit that we; in the Middle East are very poor in organizing our effort in driving WWW towards globalization (our globalization). Isam was searching from Arab Blogger for some time, I also did same for a while, sometimes succeeded, most-of-the-times failed to find them.

The problem is that our coders wizards are busy in doing their own stuff, I haven't seen real interest in organizing a community for Arab Blogger. Therefore, I was happy to see Jordan Planet as a first step on this road. I really hope it works and attract Arab Blogger.

Meanwhile, I have to admit that I was building something similar for a while. I will not disclose the name of the web site(s) now. However all ideas are welcome. What do you think will attract Arab Blogger.

IMHO, we need to have:
1. An aggregator web site
2. A Geo Directory
3. Online Blogger Code (similar to Blogger .com, Userland, Typepad, etc..)

However, I have to admit again that I'm not a programmer. Although I'm a hacker of some sort, but I can't really right full codes to do the above. That's why I spend more than 6 hours daily searching "Open Source" codes trying to find something that can be used to do any of the above. At the moment I got something that meets part of the first task (aggregator), however it is not automated. But that can be solved with a corn job, not big deal :-)

Once more, this is a open invitation for Arab coders to start presenting ideas so that we can all collaborate to make some difference for the Arab Blogger community.
