The Jewish paradox comes down to this. Israel was created by Zionism to guarantee the wellbeing and existence of the Jews, but that wellbeing and perhaps even existence is most seriously threatened by Zionism’s policies and actions.
What we are witnessing today is a rising, global tide of anti-Israelism. It is NOT a manifestation of anti-Semitism, meaning that it’s not being driven by prejudice against or loathing and even hatred of Jews just because they are Jews. Anti-Israelism is being provoked by Israel’s arrogance of power, its sickening self-righteousness and its contempt for international law in general and the rights of the Palestinians in particular. Alan Hart examines what it would take for Obama and Abbas to stop being grovellers to Israel and the Zionist lobby, and wonders if they’d both be assassinated if they ceased grovelling.
To date, Israel’s leaders and Zionist supporters have shown an amazing capacity to ignore all criticism. The newly re-elected prime minister, Binyamin Netanyahu, has let it be known that he has no intention of watching The Gatekeepers. It is also questionable how many of those who voted for him, or other right-wing politicians, will bother to seek the documentary out.
Zionism was to be the cure for “anti-Semitism” and the savior of Jews; however it turned out to be the Jews’ greatest threat and nightmare. So much for God’s “Promised Land” to the Jews. If God himself gave Palestine to the Jews (of yester years, not those of today) wouldn’t every Jew immigrate to the Promised Land and fulfill and obey God’s command and promise?
Obviously not. The majority of Jews rejected God’s covenant and promise preferring the capitalistic success and power they have in western nations, none more so than in the Jewish compliant U.S.
In fact more Jews are leaving Israel than are entering it.
Concomitant with these rumours is the Egyptian government’s and the opposition’s race to please the United States and its Zionist lobby. While the very same Issam al-Aryan spoke about the tragedy of the Jewish holocaust while in the US on a Muslim Brotherhood promotional trip in May 2011, the naïve and charisma-less Mohamed el-Baradei upped the ante by telling a German newspaper that elected Salafi and Brotherhood members of parliament should not be trusted to draft the Egyptian constitution because they allegedly deny the holocaust!
The Israeli actions are a source of great suffering for Palestinians, it is tempting also to see them as being a sign that the Zionist project is doomed. Israeli actions seem almost designed to accelerate their own international isolation. One might almost assume that they consider it more worthwhile, at this stage, to establish “facts on the ground” which would partially dictate final dispositions.
The US and Israel could end the merciless unremitting assault and open the borders, and provide for reconstruction – and if it were imaginable, reparations for decades of violence and repression in Palestine.
The quest for peace based on the co-existence between Israel and Palestine has taken a big step forwards. Unity between the Palestinians should be the next. US support for the actual creation of the State of Palestine should come soon after.
Wherever the Israelis and their Zionist cohorts are leading us, it is not into the light, it is to someplace very very dark. Israel is the last surviving heirs to the dreadful racist heritage.
Uri Avnery argues that Israel’s Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Ehud Barak, and their sycophantic parrots in the media and the political establishment, are leading Israel to disaster, just as Golda Meir and Moshe Dayan did in 1973, except this time it could be much worse.
Netanyahu: If Hamas joins the Palestinian government, we will not hold negotiations with the Palestinian Authority….The peace process can only advance while maintaining security arrangements, which is becoming more difficult in light of the current situation in the region.
Uri Avnery views Newt Gingrich’s parroting of the old Zionist propaganda line that there is no such a thing as a Palestinian people – a line now discarded by most Zionists – and argues that the US Republican presidential aspirant is not only being provocative, but is also doing immense damage to US national interests.
The racist and colonialist characteristics of Zionism were quite evident since its inception. Stability and peace in the Middle East are unattainable without first deconstructing the settler-colonial attitude upon which Israel is founded.
If sincere, Israel’s liberal who support a two-state solution to “save Israel from itself” should start advising their friends to de-Zionise their institutions and laws. For without such a move the Israeli polity will continue to be nothing but a Herrenvolk democracy and an apartheid system. This is no recipe for peace. On the contrary, it is a cause for conflict.
There is an illusion that a liberal, forward thinking government can rise in Israel and then everything will be just as liberal Zionists wish it to be. They will pick up where Rabin and Arafat left off and we will have the pie in sky Jewish democracy liberal Jews want so much to see in Israel. This illusion is shared by American Jews. But alas, reality continues to slap everyone in the face: Zionism and peace are incompatible. I will say it again, Zionism and peace are incompatible.
Nothing has changed in 37 years. It’s the same arrogant hubris, the same obstinate resistance to any prospect of an agreement, the same failure to recognize that only peace will save us from another defense minister who sinks into an existential depression while warning of an impending holocaust. What’s the point of this festival of 1973 war documents and this retroactive dance of death? Why look back, if on the day the settlement building freeze ended the settlers did a remarkably accurate imitation of the dance of arrogance that preceded the 1973 war?
