Groups worldwide have conducted a successful campaign for the boycott of Leviev's companies due to their involvement in Israeli settlement construction in violation of international law, and
In addition to businesspeople, among the guests present at the breakfast was TV personality Dr. Ruth Westheimer who tried unsuccessfully to avoid notice as she left. Guests watched from the second floor of Leviev's store as protesters chanted and sang outside. Some attempted to defend Israel's dismal human rights record when they left. The protest came as Leviev is struggling in court in Israel to save his company Africa-Israel from bankruptcy and from creditors, and to retain ownership.

Ethan Heitner from Adalah-NY explained, "By holding this breakfast at Leviev, the Israel Business Leaders Delegation and the American-Israel Friendship League have endorsed Israeli settlements. People should not be attending lavish breakfasts hosted by Leviev when his settlements are cutting off Palestinian villages from their farmland and impoverishing them, and Palestinian activists like Mohammad Othman from Jayyous are being imprisoned for protesting against them."

The breakfast at Leviev's store came at the end of a three-day New York program for the delegation, organized by the America-Israel Friendship League that featured business and government VIPs from Israel and the US, including guest speakers like AOL CEO Tim Armstrong, Loews President James Tisch, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, Israeli Ambassador Michael Oren, and Israeli Government Ministers Gideon Sa'ar and Uzi Landau.

In addition to Leviev, other Israeli companies featured in the delegation are deeply involved in Israel's apartheid policies. Michael Federmann, Chairman of the Board of Elbit Systems Ltd. spoke in the "Homeland Security Roundtable," though the Norwegian government divested from Elbit due to its provision of surveillance equipment for Israel's wall that cuts through the West Bank, separating Palestinians from their farmland. Another speaker was Moshe Gaon, Chairman of the Board of B. Gaon Holdings. B. Gaon Holdings is one of the owners of Ahava, the Israeli cosmetics company that has been the subject of a successful worldwide boycott campaign launched by CODEPINK over Ahava's exploitation of Dead Sea minerals from the Occupied West Bank, in violation of international law.

Alexis Stern from Adalah-NY explained, "The visit of this Israeli business delegation to the US was shameful, because there should be no business as usual with Apartheid Israel. Many Israeli companies are directly or indirectly involved in supporting Israel's oppression of the Palestinian people. They should be boycotted, not celebrated." Hundreds of Palestinian civil society organizations have called for a worldwide movement of Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) against Israel, modeled on the anti-apartheid movement against South Africa, aiming to end Israeli abuses of Palestinian rights. The BDS movement gained momentum following Israel's winter assault on the Gaza that killed 1400 Palestinians.

Mohammad Othman. Othman, held without charges and in solitary confinement since September 22nd, is from Jayyous, a West Bank village where Leviev's company Leader is building the Israeli settlement of Zufim. The protesters also called for an end to Israel's wave of arrests of Palestinian activists from Bil'in, another West Bank village campaigning against the construction of settlement homes by another Leviev company, Africa-Israel.

Andrew Kadi of Adalah-NY commented, "Israel's arrest of Mohammad Othman and residents of Bil'in simply affirms the need for a global movement of Boycott Divestment and Sanctions (BDS), similar to the movement against apartheid South Africa, to hold Israel accountable, and pressure Israel to respect Palestinian rights."

Mohammad Othman is believed to be the first person to be arrested by Israel specifically for advocating for the growing international movement to boycott companies, including Leviev's, that support Israeli human rights abuses. The New York protest was one of fourteen events held worldwide on October 16th and 17th calling for Mohammad Othman's immediate release.

Hundreds of Madison Avenue shoppers took home a cartoon flyer "Jailed for an Idea" that depicts Othman's detention, and Israel's efforts to crush the protest campaigns in the villages of Bil'in and Jayyous against Leviev's settlements (download the cartoon flyer - attached below). The protesters chanted, "Jayyous and Bil'in will not bow, Free Mohammad Othman now," and "Boycotting Israel is no crime, Leviev should be doing time." With a guitar accompaniment, the protesters sang songs calling for the boycott of Leviev and Israel, including an updated version of the civil rights classic, "which Side are You On," and "Don't Buy Israeli" to the tune of Hava Nagila.
<div

Othman was detained as he crossed the Allenby bridge from Jordan, returning home to the West Bank from a trip to Norway. Othman's advocacy efforts on behalf of the growing international movement for BDS against Israel contributed to the Norwegian government's recent decision <a

Twenty-eight Bil'in activists have been arrested by Israel since June when Bil'in's lawsuit against settlement construction on village land was heard in Canadian court. Just weeks after he testified in Canada, Bil'in activist Mohammed Khatib was jailed by Israeli forces for 15 days and then released on bail. Bil'in protester Adeeb Abu Rahme and seventeen others are still being held in Israeli jails, and Bil'in protest organizer Abdullah Abu Rahme is "wanted" by the Israeli army for his nonviolent organizing.

The protest was 14th held in front of Leviev's New York store since it opened in November, 2007. Leviev's company Africa-Israel is currently reeling from a financial crisis. Additionally, the international campaign to boycott Leviev due to his settlement construction and involvement in abusive business practices in the diamond industry in Angola and Namibia has achieved Adalah-NY has learned that the jewelry of Israeli billionaire and settlement-builder Lev Leviev will be on sale at this week's gala opening of the luxury hotel Atlantis, The Palm in Dubai. Despite Leviev's on-going construction of Israeli settlements and claims by United Arab Emirates officials that Leviev would receive no license to sell his jewelry there, the New York-based human rights coalition Adalah-NY has confirmed that Leviev's jewelry will be on sale at the Atlantis branch of the Levant Jewelry chain on the fabled Palm Jumeirah island.

Adalah-NY has also heard from a Dubai source that Leviev will attend the grand opening events in person, but the group has been unable to corroborate this report. A press release on the Atlantis web site claims that the opening gala, set for November 20-21st, "will culminate in a giant fireworks display," and that guests will include "prominent CEO's, business leaders, politicians, actors and musicians and members of the Dubai Royal family."

Adalah-NY has obtained photos (see below) of Leviev jewelry prominently displayed in the windows of the Levant store at the Atlantis, with Leviev's name and logo prominently printed on display cases. Leviev's jewelry and logo are featured at the Levant store at the Al Qasr Hotel. Leviev notes Dubai as a store location on the front of his Madison Avenue boutique in New York, and in recent Leviev ads in the New York Times.

announced plans to open in Dubai two Leviev stores and sell his products in a third store in partnership with his local partner, Arif Ben-Khadra, who is of Palestinian-Moroccan origin. Subsequently, in an April 30 article in Dubai's Gulf News, Ali Ebrahim, Deputy Director General for Executive Affairs in Dubai, said Leviev would not be able to do business in Dubai. "We are aware of these reports and have not granted a trade licence to any business of this name. If such an application does come to us we will deal with it accordingly," said Ebrahim. Further, Ebrahim told the paper that Israeli citizens were not allowed to do business in Dubai, and that "precautionary measures" made sure of that. Ebrahim further implied Leviev would not be able to do business through a localpartner. "There are no loopholes," he said. "We check backgrounds of businesses that apply."

Leviev built his enormous fortune trading diamonds with Apartheid-era South Africa. His company mines diamonds in partnership with the repressive Angolan government. New York Magazine reported in 2007 that in Angola, "A security company contracted by Leviev was accused... of participating in practices of ‘humiliation, whipping, torture, sexual abuse, and, in some cases, assassinations.'" Also, according to the diamond industry watchdog Partnership Africa Canada (PDF file), Angola and Leviev have failed to fully comply with the Kimberley Process.

In the West Bank, Leviev's companies build Israeli-only settlements such as Ma'aleh Adumim, Mattityahu East and Zufim on stolen Palestinian land. According to Stop the Wall, Leviev is currently expanding Zufim settlement by 45 housing units on land owned by the village of Jayyous (see photo). Jayyous continues to hold non-violent protests against the confiscation of their land. All Israeli settlements are illegal under international law. UNICEF and Oxfam have both rejected support from Leviev due to his human rights violations, and the British government is under pressure to pull put of a deal to rent their new Tel Aviv Embassy from him.

Daniel Lang/Levitsky of Adalah-NY stated that "Dubai claimed that it has closed all the loopholes, but we have seen that to be glaringly false. Leviev jewelry will be prominently displayed and sold at a major hotel in Dubai. By allowing such a blatant contravention of its own laws, Dubai has made a mockery of its promise to boycott Leviev. The villagers of Jayyous and Bil'in, on whose stolen land Leviev's settlements sit, will be saddened and outraged, as will be human rights advocates worldwide."

[Source: UNICEF Rejects Support From Israeli Billionaire Known for Constructing Settlements on Palestinian Lands

Diamond Mogul, Lev Leviev, Facing Increasing Pressure for Human Rights Violations

A senior advisor to UNICEF's Director said in a letter today that UNICEF will reject all partnerships with, or financial support from, Israeli billionaire Lev Leviev. Leviev had previously provided UNICEF with support by sponsoring fundraising events in France. Leviev's past support for UNICEF is featured in a number of places on his company's website (www.leviev.com).

UNICEF's rejection of Leviev's support followed meetings with Adalah-NY, letters from organizations and Palestinian communities advocating a boycott of Leviev's companies, and a visit by UNICEF officials to Jayyous, one of the Palestinian communities where a Leviev company is building Israeli settlements. Leviev's diamond-mining companies in Angola have also been accused of serious human rights abuses.

Abdullah Abu Rahme, a community leader from the West Bank village of Bil'in, said, "We welcome UNICEF's decision to hold one of the companies that has been building Mattityahu East settlement accountable for attempting to destroy our community. Our village has engaged in a three and a half year nonviolent campaign to save our land, and an international boycott is an important complement to our weekly protests. This is a victory, but we need many more like it." Leviev's companies have also recently built homes in the settlements of Maale Adumim and Har Homa, both of which cut off East Jerusalem from the West Bank.

A June 19 letter to Adalah-NY from Chris De Bono, senior communications advisor to UNICEF's Executive Director, stated: "Yesterday we confirmed that UNICEF has concluded that it will not consider partnerships - direct or indirect - with Mr. Lev Leviev or any of his corporate entities, and will not accept financial or other support that we know is from him or his corporate entities. The concerned parts of the UNICEF family, including our national committees, have been advised of this." (See the full UNICEF letter: http://adalahny.org/images/stories/unicef-leviev.pdf) The letter followed a June 18th meeting at UNICEF's New York headquarters with representatives from Adalah-NY.

In a previous March 25, 2008 letter to Adalah-NY, UNICEF explained that Leviev had indirectly supported UNICEF three times, "each time as a sponsor of fundraising activities organized by the French magazine Gala in support of UNICEF." In the same letter UNICEF expressed its support for UN resolutions stating that Israeli settlements violate international law. Then in April, UNICEF received letters demanding that it reject all support from Leviev from Jewish Voice for Peace, Defence for Children International-Palestine, the villages of Jayyous and Bil'in, The Palestinian Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions Campaign, and Jews Against the Occupation.

The Mayor of the West Bank village of Jayyous, Mohammed Taher Jaber, commented: "UNICEF officials visited us in May and saw the terrible impacts on our children of the theft of our farmland for the expansion of Zufim settlement by Leviev's company Leader. We thank UNICEF for upholding international law, and supporting children's rights, and we call on other organizations to do the same."

When contacted by Adalah-NY in January, Oxfam International announced publicly that it had not received support from Leviev, contrary to press reports and information on one of Leviev's websites, and that it would not accept his support in the future due to Leviev's companies' settlement construction. Dubai has also recently announced that it would not allow Leviev to open planned jewelry stores in the Emirate following boycott calls issued by Adalah-NY and Palestinian communities.

Leviev has already opened one store in Dubai in March, 2008, in the lobby of al-Qasr Hotel on Madinat Jumeirah.
The Dubai authorities were initially reluctant to grant the Israeli billionaire a license to do business in the oil-rich emirate. However, Leviev reportedly successfully lobbied "North American and European connections" to convince Dubai officials to reconsider their objections.

Leviev's companies, including Africa-Israel and Leader Management & Development as well as several other subsidiaries, have been quite active in displacing Palestinian villagers from their homes and land in several parts of the West Bank.

The two firms have built hundreds of settler units in at least five Jewish settlements constructed on land illegally seized from its Arab proprietors.

In recent years, a company called Leader belonging to Leviev built the settlement of Zufim on private Arab land seized from the village of Jayyous. Danya Cebus, a subsidiary of the Leviev-owned company Africa-Israel has built hundreds of settler units on land stolen from the village of Bilin. Numerous additional settler units were built in the two large settlements of Ma'ali Adomim, a few kilometers east of Jerusalem, and Har Homa, near the predominantly Christian Arab town of Beit Sahur.

Israel hopes that these settlements will cut off East Jerusalem from the rest of the West Bank, thus making the Palestinian dream of making the city the future capital of a prospective Palestinian state utterly unrealistic and outright impossible.

In addition to his intensive involvement in Jewish settlement expansion, including colonies defined by the inherently unjust Israeli justice system as "manifestly illegal," Leviev has donated undisclosed but reportedly large sums of money to the Land Redemption Fund, a land-grabbing organization affiliated with Gush Emunim, the ideological group behind Jewish settlement activities in the West Bank.

According to the Israeli newspaper, Yediot Aharonot, the Land Redemption Fund uses fraud and strong-arm tactics to seize land from Palestinians for settlement expansion.

Last year the Israeli group, Peace Now, and other settlement-watch groups, discovered that hundreds of settler units built in the settlement of Matityahu in the Salfit region, in the central West Bank, were actually built on private Palestinian land seized at gun point from its legal and rightful Palestinian owners.
However, despite the discovery, the Israeli government refused to dismantle the illegal settler units, with one Israeli official saying that "this problem will be discussed with the Palestinian Authority in the context of final-status talks."

Leviev's companies are actually destroying the lives of thousands of Palestinians by narrowing their horizons and dispossessing them of their livelihoods.

Abdullah Abu Rahma from the village of Bilin and Sharif Omar from Jayyous told representative of the human rights group Adalah-NY (www.adalahny.org), which monitors Israeli theft Palestinian land, that "Leviev's companies are destroying the olive groves and farms that have sustained our villages for centuries."

"We call on people of conscience all over the world to impose broad boycotts and implement divestment initiatives against Israel similar to those applied against apartheid South Africa."

The mayor of Jayyous, which suffered incalculable losses due to Leviev's destructive rampage in the northern West Bank, told this reporter that "Leveiv is indulging in ethnic cleansing against our community and our farmers."

"He is building settlements at our expense; he is destroying our land, our farms, and our orchards, and at the same time he is opening business in Dubai in order to finance his crimes against our people. Shame on Dubai and its government."

Some Jewish organizations opposed to the Israeli policy of ethnic cleansing and apartheid have also called on the countries of the world to boycott Israeli businesses and firms involved in dispossessing Palestinians of their land.
"We call on the government and people of the United Arab Emirates to join the growing international campaign to boycott Lev Leviev's companies due to their construction of Israeli colonial settlements," declared Daniel Lang-Levitsky of Jews Against the Occupation-NYC.

"A major Israeli violator of Palestinian rights and international law should not be opening jewelry stores in Dubai," said Issa Ayoub, a spokesperson for the Adalah-NY group. Adalah-NY organized eight boycott protests outside Leviev's new Madison Avenue Jewelry store in New York City over the last five months.

The Palestinian Authority has refused to comment on the Dubai government decision to allow the settler bankroller Leviev to open business ventures in the oil-rich emirate.

One Palestinian official contacted by telephone said "I don't know anything about this affair and I have not heard of Leviev."

A Hamas official in the Gaza Strip said "the Palestinian people were feeling embittered and betrayed by this scandalous behavior on the part of the Dubai government."

"We were hoping that Dubai would stand with us against the genocidal Israeli regime and its unrelenting efforts to ethnically cleanse our people from their ancestral homeland. We had never imagined that a day would come when we had to appeal to an Arab country to refrain from harming us and undermining our cause."

Call on Dubai to boycott Leviev’s stores over Israel settlements

Boycott

UAE

Dubai

Israel

Leviev

Palestine

Settlements

United-Arab-Emirates
<guid

According to a flurry of recent media reports, Leviev is opening jewelry stores in Dubai during 2008.

"We call on the government and people of the United Arab Emirates to join the growing international campaign to boycott Lev Leviev's companies due to their construction of Israeli colonial settlements, and their human rights violations in Angola," declared Daniel Lang-Levitsky of Jews Against the Occupation-NYC. "A major Israeli violator of Palestinian rights and international law should not be opening jewelry stores in Dubai," added Adalah-NY spokesperson Issa Ayoub. Adalah-NY has organized eight boycott protests outside Leviev's new Madison Avenue jewelry store over the last five months.

In the last few days, media have reported that Lev Leviev Diamonds will open two stores in Dubai this year. In the fourth quarter of 2008, construction will begin on a store to be located in the Burj Dubai Mall. The second will open in September in the new Atlantis Hotel on Jumeirah Palm Island. Leviev has already opened one store in Dubai in March, 2008 in the lobby of Al-Qasr Hotel on Madinat Jumeirah.

Leviev's company Leader is building the settlement of Zufim on the land of the West Bank village of Jayyous. The company Danya Cebus, a subsidiary of Leviev's Africa-Israel, has also built Israeli settlements on the land of the village of Bil'in, and has built homes in Maale Adumim and Har Homa on Jabal Abu Ghneim, encircling and cutting off East Jerusalem from the West Bank. Israel is building its wall to the east of all these settlements, with the aim of annexing them to Israel. Leviev also donates to the Land Redemption Fund, an Israeli settler organization which has used deceit and strong-arm tactics to secure Israeli-occupied Palestinian land for settlements in villages like Bil'in and Jayyous.

Israeli settlements directly violate international law according to the UN, all major human rights organizations and the International Court of Justice's 2004 advisory opinion on Israel's wall. The IJC's opinion also said that states are responsible for ensuring that Israel complies with international law.

Abdullah Abu-Rahme from Bil'in and Sharif Omar from Jayyous explained, "Leviev's companies are destroying the olive groves and farms that have sustained our villages for centuries, and are profiting from human rights abuses." The growing international movement to boycott Israel has developed in response to the 2005 Palestinian Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) call by 171 Palestinian civil society organizations (www.bds-palestine.net) asking for "people of conscience all over the world to impose broad boycotts and implement divestment initiatives against Israel similar to those applied to" apartheid South Africa in order to end "Israel's persistent violations of international law," and "colonial and discriminatory policies."

In Angola, Leviev works closely with the repressive Dos Santos regime to mine and sell the country's diamonds, and he employs the private security firm K&P Mineira, which has been accused of torturing, sexually abusing and even murdering Angolans. According to the non-profit watchdog group Partnership Africa Canada, around 10% of the diamonds sold from Angola, including some of Leviev's, fail to comply with the Kimberley Process which was created to end the trade in "blood diamonds."

Source: By Adalah-NY

New York, NY, Feb 9, 2008 - Forty-five protesters called on Madison Avenue shoppers to boycott the jewelry store of Israeli billionaire and settlement magnate Lev Leviev this Saturday, the last major shopping day before Valentine's Day. The protest was the seventh organized by the New York activist group Adalah-NY since Leviev's store opened in mid-November.

Londoners also joined the campaign to boycott Leviev, with 25 human rights activists picketing outside Leviev's Old Bond St. store Saturday. The protesters in New York and London oppose Leviev's construction of Israeli settlements on Occupied Palestinian land in violation of international law, as well as his abuse of marginalized communities in Angola, where he mines diamonds, and in New York City where he develops real estate.

Facing the shop window at LEVIEV New York which was emblazoned with the words "Celebrate Love with Leviev" in pink, the New York protesters carried red, heart-shaped signs saying "Settlements are Heartless," "Have a Heart Leviev" and "Won't You be Just." Protesters sang a parody, vaudeville-style version of "Diamonds Are a Girls Best Friend," including the lyrics:

"Lev grows bold,
With billions sold,
And Palestine starves while you spend,"

"No matter what they say,
Apartheid's the endgame,
Lev's diamonds are a crime's best friend."

<img

They danced to traditional Palestinian wedding songs celebrating love including, "Ya Zareef Atool" and "Dalouna."

The protesters performed a racy parody of "The Dating Game" entitled "The One Date Solution, for those who want to settle", featuring a contestant named Lev who was wooed by three other contestants - a pro-Israel legal scholar and author of the book "The Case for Ethnic Cleansing" named Alana; the daughter of a repressive African dictator with extensive diamond holdings; and Lev's spurned ex-Brooklyn real estate partner. In response to a criticism of his human rights record from one contestant, Lev explained, "Lev means never having to say you're sorry." But "The Dating Game" ended before Lev was able to choose a date because the audience voted Lev out of New York City and Palestine. Also displayed at the protest was a six foot JDate profile for Leviev which noted, among other things, "In my free time, I enjoy: Exploitation, Profiteering, Union-Busting, and Macrame."

An Adalah-NY representative tried to deliver a three foot by two foot heart-shaped valentine to the store for Leviev. The valentine featured photos from Palestinian villages like Bil'in and Jayyous where Leviev's companies are building Israeli settlements, and hand-written messages from protesters like "Stop the Land Theft", "Jews say no to apartheid," and "Where's the love Lev?" However, store staff refused to accept the valentine, saying that Adalah-NY should mail it to Leviev.

In London, 25 demonstrators from Architects and Planners for Justice in Palestine, together with support from the Palestine Solidarity Campaign, Stop the Wall and Jews for Justice for Palestinians held a Valentine's Day protest outside the jewelry shop Leviev in normally sedate Old Bond Street London, holding placards, and leafleting to curious passers by. The posters highlighted Leviev's settlement construction in Bil'in and Jayyous, and included the violence of uprooting olive trees and armed soldiers' assaults against Palestinian farmers.

NY photos: <a

Leviev's company Danya Cebus has been building the Israeli settlement of Mattityahu East on the land of the West Bank village of Bil'in, threatening the village's survival. The film, by Israeli director Shai Pollak, documents the first two years of Bil'in's three year creative, nonviolent struggle to save its land from Israel's wall and Leviev's settlements.

<object

The protest, organized by the New York activist group Adalah-NY and calling for a boycott of Leviev, was the sixth held at LEVIEV New York since the store opened in November.

"Bil'in My Love," won Best Documentary at the 2006 Jerusalem Film Festival, and a special award at the 2006 Rotterdam film festival. On the US holiday honoring the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., hundreds of passers-by received flyers with photos juxtaposing the Palestinian struggle for freedom with the struggle against Apartheid South Africa and the US civil rights struggle of African-Americans.

The Israeli military has injured over 800 Israeli, Palestinian and international protesters in more than 200 demonstrations in Bil'in over three years. 49 Bil'in residents, including some protest leaders, have been arrested. Some spent months in prison. The flyer quoted Mohammed Khatib from Bil'in's Popular Committee Against the Wall and Settlements, and Sharif Omar of Jayyous' Land Defense Committee explaining that, "We are engaged in a struggle for justice, for our freedom - indeed, for our very lives . . . . Leviev is destroying the olive groves and farms that have sustained our villages for centuries, and is profiting from human rights abuses."

In addition to Mattityahu East, Leviev's company Danya Cebus is building homes in the illegal settlements of Har Homa and Maale Adumim, surrounding East Jerusalem. Leviev's company Leader is building the settlement of Zufim on the land of the village of Jayyous, the site of another long Palestinian nonviolent campaign. Leviev has been a major donor to the Land Redemption Fund, an Israeli organization that uses dubious means to secure Palestinian land to expand settlements. All Israeli settlements are widely deemed illegal under international law.

Dor Energy, a company which is 26% owned by Leviev's company Africa Israel and is the monopoly fuel supplier to the Gaza Strip, has plunged Gaza City into darkness by participating in a cut of the fuel supply to Gaza with the Israeli government. In Angola, where Leviev mines many of his diamonds, a security firm he employs has been accused of brutal human rights abuses against Angolans. In New York City, Leviev, along with his former New York business partner Shaya Boymelgreen, was the target of a campaign by the ACORN and the Laborers Union in Brooklyn for their use of underpaid non-union labor to carry out sub-standard development projects.

Leviev has recently been caught up in a controversy-covered by the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, Ma'ariv and The Chronicle of Philanthropy-over media reports that he supports the charity Oxfam. Oxfam has reviewed its records and denies these claims, noting that Oxfam refuses donations from businesses that violate international law.

Issa Mikel of Adalah-NY noted that, "We'll be back at LEVIEV New York with a bigger protest on Saturday, February 9 to tell New York shoppers that buying Leviev's jewelry for Valentine's Day supports the abuse of marginalized communities in Palestine, Angola, and right here in New York City."

Jan. 21 <a

He is now recovering and can be reached at 0547258210. You can watch the video or read the report here:

<object

In Bil'in, the wall is stealing more than 60% of village land, and even the Israeli Supreme Court said in a recent decision that the route of the wall was not planned for military reasons, but for land.

In that September 4th Supreme Court decision, the Wall was ordered to be taken down and the route redrawn. This was a court victory for the joint non-violent struggle, but has yet to be reflected with facts on the ground. The wall is still standing, and in fact recently settlers attempted to place new caravans on village land.

The demonstration began as a march towards the gate in the Wall, where soldiers were standing with guns drawn. At the front of the march was the banner, "LEVIEV TURNS THESE ROCKS OF APARTHEID INTO DIAMONDS" in reference to the diamond mogul Lev Leviev, protesting his extensive involvement in the construction of illegal settlements in the West Bank.

Soldiers let off a barrage of flash bombs when people got close. Flash bombs are similar to sound bombs, but they explode much sooner and are made of metal instead of plastic, so they weigh a lot more. They are generally used to injure people, where as normal sounds bombs mostly disorient people. A few demonstrators were hit by the flying metal objects, but none seriously injured.

After about an hour people began to move back towards the village, the soldiers used this chance to shoot off cannister after cannister of tear gas. One man was taken away on a stretcher from his exposure to the gas. Activists stood on the opposite hill and regrouped while soldiers continued to shoot gas and rubber-coated steel bullets. Twice the army drove up the street to try and grab people but were stopped by makeshift stone roadblocks people built.

Near the end of the demonstration, army snipers shot Bil'in Popular Committee member Abdullah Abu Rahme in the head with a rubber-coated steel bullet. Abdullah was also one of the activists hospitalized a week ago when settlers attacked a group of Palestinians who were non-violently protesting the placement of more caravans on their land. After the soldier shot Abdullah, he dances a bit and cheers, telling his comrades-in-arms that he "got one in the head!"

Stealing Lots o’ Palestinian Land, Caroling against Leviev

Israel

Palestine

United States

Videos

diamond

Leviev

NY

occupation

palestinian

Settlements
<guid

This was the fourth protest at Leviev's Madison Avenue jewelry store since its gala opening on November 13.

A diverse group of enthusiastic participants sang loud and creative versions of 11 traditional holiday songs. Carolers serenaded upscale Madison Avenue shoppers and New York City police with the debut performance of "I Made a Little Settlement" to the tune of "Dreidel, Dreidel, Dreidel":

"Apartments for Jews only, Discrimination, sure!

He thinks Palestine's the problem, and Apartheid is the cure!"

"Oh boycott boycott boycott, Don't buy Leviev today

Funds crime with all that profit, Who needs diamonds anyway?"

Leviev's companies are currently involved in building homes in at least four Israeli settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territories. All Israeli settlements violate international law according to a broad international consensus. Two weeks ago, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice specifically criticized Israel's plans for construction in Har Homa, one settlement where a Leviev company is contracted to build. In Angola where he mines many of his diamonds, a security firm working for Leviev was accused of physically abusing workers. In New York City, his developments with his ex-partner Shaya Boymelgreen have come under attack from the community group ACORN and the Laborers' Union.

Riham Barghouti of Adalah-NY commented, "Because Leviev has made it impossible for many Palestinians to live normal lives and to celebrate the holidays of Eid Al Adha and Christmas this month, we will spoil his holidays and continue our campaign against his human rights abuses." The protest closed with a rousing song to the tune of "Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer":

"Then one cold November eve, Leviev came to town

He put a store here in New York, But we will shut him down!"

"Leviev your crimes are showing, Your deeds are getting hard to hide

No matter what you call it, We say NO to apartheid!"

In response to popular demand after today's caroling debut, the Palestine Liberation Singing Troupe is considering an encore Madison Avenue performance of their hit holiday songs on Saturday, Dec. 29.

Adalah-NY: The Coalition for Justice in the Middle East: Glitterati at Leviev's New York Gala Stunned by Palestinian Rights Protest

Over 100 well-dressed, well-heeled New Yorkers attending the invitation-only opening of diamond mogul Lev Leviev's Madison Avenue jewelry store this evening appeared stunned and aghast to find their evening derailed by a noisy protest against Leviev's construction of illegal West Bank settlements. Gala attendees set down their champagne glasses and gathered by windows to view the signs and Palestinian flags, and hear protesters' chants.

30 New York City human rights activists chanted, "You're glitz, you're glam, you're stealing Palestinian land.", and "All your diamonds cannot hide, your support for Apartheid." Protesters called on New York City's upscale residents to boycott Leviev's diamonds. Disconcerted attendees hastily exited to their limousines to loud chants of, "Occupation is a drag, just say no to your gift bag."

Lev Leviev is one of Israel's richest men. He built his enormous fortune trading in diamonds with Apartheid-era South Africa. His company now buys diamonds from the repressive Angolan government. Leviev uses profits from diamond sales to fuel the conflict in Palestine and Israel by funding the construction of suburban developments for Israeli settlers on occupied Palestinian land in the West Bank, undermining the prospects for Middle East peace, and threatening farmers' ability to survive and remain in their homes. Leviev's diamonds are "conflict diamonds" in a broad sense of the term, funding repression in Angola and violations of international law in Palestine.

Leviev and his former US partner Shaya Boymlegreen have also angered New Yorkers with their abusive local developments schemes. Leviev has invested $1 billion in real estate in New York City over the last year. In New York City, Leviev and Boymelgreen have employed underpaid, non-union workers in hazardous conditions and violated housing codes to construct luxury apartments that displace low-income and moderate-income residents in Brooklyn, provoking local branches of the Laborer's International Union and ACORN to launch a campaign against these abuses (www.shayaiscoming.org). Brooklynites remain concerned that Leviev and Boymelgreen are key developers in the planned Gowanus Village project.

Leviev's real estate empire in Israel is building homes for Israelis in the West Bank settlements of Mattityahu East and Zufim, according to Gadi Algazi in the August, 2006 Le Monde Diplomatique, and in Maale Adumim and Har Homa, according to The Jerusalem Post. He has also built homes in the settlement of Ariel. All the settlements in which Leviev has built homes seize vital Palestinian water and agricultural resources and carve the West Bank into disconnected Bantustans, destroying hopes for a viable Palestinian state. All Israeli settlements built in the Occupied Palestinian Territories violate international law.

The Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth also reported on January 28, 2004 that Leviev is a primary donor to the Israeli organization the Land Redemption Fund, which allegedly uses fraud and intimidation to extort land from Palestinian farmers for Israeli settlement. While Leviev donates to UNICEF and OXFAM, 50% of families in the farming village of Jayyous are now on food aid, according to the Financial Times, because they are being choked by Leviev's expansion of the all-Jewish settlement of Zufim. Leveiv and Boymlegreen are building the settlement of Mattityahu East on the village of Bil'in's land. Bil'in has earned international acclaim for its three year campaign of nonviolent protest against the construction of settlements and Israel's wall on their farmland.

"Leviev's new Manhattan store hides the devastating use of its owner's fortune underneath shimmering facets of polished diamonds. As long as Lev Leviev violates international law by building settlements in the West Bank and attacks New York's communities with invasive luxury development, there can be no business as usual for him," said Daniel Lang/Levitsky of Jews Against the Occupation/NYC. Adalah-NY will hold a second protest at Leviev's 700 Madison Avenue jewelry store on Tuesday November 20 from 4:30 – 6:00 PM.

For more info: Adalah-NY: The Coalition for Justice in the Middle East: www.mideastjustice.org

See more photos of the protest <a
